Taking The Blinkers Off

Our friends have become quite focused on one particular aspect of Arctic ice – the September minimum. The claimed rationale is that it affects the Earth’s energy balance, by reducing albedo.

That argument is very weak – because very little sunshine reaches the Arctic atmosphere in September. Most of that is reflected by clouds, and the light which does get through is mainly reflected off the water surface, due to the high angle of incidence.

Update From Julienne – October 6

Julienne Stroeve from NSIDC has been very busy this week, but is looking in to the disappearing MYI issue for us :

Steve, I will try to take a look later today.  I know that open water developed later this summer near the pole so that could partly explain it.  The old ice also became quite a bit thinner after the 2007 melt season so that is likely contributing as well.  Note also that more “purple” appeared in the blue areas so it wasn’t just the ice older than 2 years, but also the 2 year old ice that was reduced….

I also have an email to Jim Maslanik about it, but he is out of town at the moment (back on the weekend).

They Wonder Why We Don’t Take Them Seriously – Part II

Another Aggie Professor Proves The Earth Isn’t Warming

“Texas temperatures are going up pretty much like the earth’s temperatures are,”
– Gerald North, professor of atmospheric sciences and oceanography.

Since Texas summer and annual temperatures have not warmed, that means we can put the AGW story to bed.

Looking Closer At One Region Near The Pole

Reader Peter Ellis is not convinced. The animation below circulates between three images – end of July ice age/end of September ice age/UIUC ice concentration on the date of the minimum. The images are already normalised for drift. The ice in that region was close to 100% concentration all summer.
