There has been a lot of discussion on the various threads about whether or not PIPS thickness calculations include concentration. It is pretty clear from the blink comparator above that PIPS does consider concentration. Areas of lower concentration correspond to areas of lower thickness. You can also see there is indeed a region of thick, high concentration ice north of Svalbard, which does not abut the coast.
