I’m sure our Canadian readers will have a few choice words.
Bob Whitewood, climatologist with Environment Canada, said the results aren’t unexpected.
“Clearly what we’re seeing in Canada is an increase in temperatures throughout the year, mostly in the winter months,” he said. “And what it’s showing is a warming that is above the global average.”
The greater average warming in Canada is in line with climate change model predictions of greater temperature changes in the Arctic regions, Whitewood said, and confirms climate scientists have a good understanding of the phenomenon.
Yeah, getting slightly warmer here in the winter tops my list of most feared things. (rolls eyes)
lol…….yes, I can see it now. Folks sitting at home in the NW territories, wondering aloud why, in the middle of January, it is so blessed hot!
So, is 61 years now the relevant period of time to discern a meaningful number?
“…………….the country as a whole from 1948 to 2009 found the average annual temperature for the country increased by 2 1/2 degrees Fahrenheit.”
Oops, forgot the last two years. From 1948-2009. Nope, not a chance of cherry picking there.
I just cleared a bunch of his slightly warming off the driveway about 10 cm of it, and we pay these guys
20 cm just west of Hamilton … arrrrgh!
I’m getting all misty, remembering when climate was not weather….
Those were the good old days……..
Spring temperatures have been colder than normal the past 10 years. Starting in the 90’s I’ve been going to cottage country in the summers. For the first 10 years the May 24th (Victoria Day) weekend was always warm, day and night. Now, that weekend is typically rainy and cold. Seat of the pants experience only. I don’t have numbers to back it up.
MrC
Which is probably why they went all the way back to 1948 to confirm a model, likely contrived within the last few years, to show a recent trend.

8-12″ of global warming fell today N of Guelph Ont. I saw my grass for the first time since November, last Wednesday, now it’s buried again. Just a question… how does this albedo change factor into an upcoming ice age?
By the way in 89 years it’ll only be -11C outside right now… can hardly wait. I mean it’s Canada for CriceSakes, we flee to Florida and Arizona during the winter, ANYWHERE WARM, young, old, rich, poor, everyone who can goes. We stay indoors enmass (if you live in a city) and are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)…… cuz it’s real sad if you freeze to death.
Little known fact… the best soil in the province of Ontario is a clay belt (glacial benefit) that runs between the Timmins-Cochrane area and is sufficient in area to feed the province. If only it was warm enough to have a growing season. Perhaps global warming will bless us in the Great White North more.
In case you feel I’m being selfish thinking of my own global warming benefits, I don’t see anyone worrying about my risk of freezing to death so there!
All the still cold best… Jeff
Environment Canada is competing with the British MET office for the Chicken Little award. Is it a coincidence that the quality of their forecasts has a trend inversely proportional to their infatuation with AGW?
Canada is the epicenter of the newly discovered warmcold phenomena and thus should have many BBQ winters in their future.
