Trenberth Locates The Missing Heat

Kevin Trenberth says that 20% of Sandy was due to global warming – which raised ocean temperatures as seen in the red circle below.

It is truly remarkable how global warming selectively targeted 3% of the Earth’s surface, while leaving much of the ocean well below normal temperatures.

So it means the other 80% is his bullshit and 15 to 17% of .038% is the cause of his 20%, Brilliant! πŸ˜†

  2. Bob Tilsdale’s analysis further demonstrated that sea surface temperatures over the Sandy storm track were not outside the normal range of anomalies and that body of water had not changed in temperature for over half a century. So you can’t even claim it strengthened the storm by even 5 or 10%

  3. lance says:

yes, and late this summer the Global TV had some ‘so called’ scientist claiming that the puffin’s in Newfoundland were having difficulty raising there young this summer due to the affects of Global Warming….right!!! and Next summer when that ocean is below normal we can ask him what happend to that GW…they just love to parade this idiots in front of the TV…and they want to keep the Koolaid coming…

  4. Bill Pounder says:

“Nowhere on the surface of the planet have we seen any record cold temperatures over the course of the year so far. Every land surface in the world saw warmer-than-average temperatures except Alaska and the eastern tip of Russia. The continental United States has been blanketed with record warmth β€” and the seas just off the East Coast have been much warmer than average, for which Sandy sends her thanks.”

The vaunted true believers at Grist fail to mention that, according to HadCRUT3 and RSS, there has been no statistically significant global warming for 16 years. The so-called experts also fail to note the slight cooling trend since 2002.

If temperature records were adjusted downward to account for the urban heat island (UHI) effect, the trend would be on a downslope. But NOAA and NASA manage to keep the AGW scare alive by manipulating temperature data through homogenization, interpolation and time-of-observation adjustments, all which, not surprisingly, create a warming signal. This isn’t science; it’s Etch-A-Sketch numbers tampering.

Sadly, the climate science coming out of NOAA and NASA can no longer be trusted. Career advancement, politics, and salaries and perks prevent any would-be internal whistle-blowers from stepping forward and exposing the scientific malfeasance.

    • Not warmer than average if you consider the full range of natural variability over the last 50-70 years. I think this is where eco-worriers seem to be confusing themselves.

  5. John B., M.D. says:

Sandy didn’t pass over that area, no?

  6. robert barclay says:

You cannot heat water from above. Radiate it yes HEAT it no Reason, surface tension.

    • John B., M.D. says:

Surface tension is completely unrelated to heat transfer. Did you never take a physics class? AGW skeptics that talk about surface tension make us look stupid. It’s one step removed from believing the Earth is 6000 years old.

    • Sorry Robert the sun warms the oceans and that is ”above”. Surface tension has no effect on the raising/loosing temperature of any liquid.

  7. robert barclay says:

If you apply the heat from a heatgun to the surface of water NO heat passes. remember that surface tension is demonstrated by placing a paper clip on thesurface of water and observing that it does not sink. The weight is not sufficient to penetrate the surface and heat has no weight. If you want to put physicl heat into water from above you must first cover the surface and cancel the surface tension.

    • John B., M.D. says:

      What is your scientific training?

    • I had thought that the Sun heats the ocean, but apparently it is the campfire burning at the bottom.

    • Your paper clip only floats if it is dry to start with. Wet it and it sinks. Apply heat to water’s surface with a heat gun and it will heat up and start to steam. Try the experiment. surface tension has NO part to play.

      • robert barclay says:

The reason I made the post was because I did the experiment and did not get any reaction to the applied heat at all. I did a second experiment. I set up two basins of water con figured identically except that Ifloated a baking dish on the second basin. I applied the heat from the gun onto each basin for 15mins. On basin one uncovered temp rise 6degF on basin two covered temp rise48degs F. The reason that I got any rise on basin one is down to the face that the fan forcing simulates heat and allows a small of heat through..

  8. paddylol says:

I understad that one of the consequences from major tropical hurricanes is massive upwelling of cold water along its path. Trenberth’s new found hot spot is gone and his search must continue. I am reminded of the old adage: here tide gone tomorrow.

  9. Good grief does that guy actually do any real science at all? Haha…sorry, rhetorical question…
Magic hot-spots…just like magic energy budgets!

  10. robert barclay says:

You don’t need scientific training you need a bucket of water and a heat gun and common sense. The rejection of heat by the surface of the water is total. Trenberth’s heat didn’t go into the ocean in the first place it is back in space. Science has assumed that everything follows the second law of thermodynamics i.e. heat automatically flows from a heat source to a colder place but they forgot surface tension and they didn’t CHECK.

    • John B., M.D. says:

So, you’re saying surface tension repelled the electromagnetic radiation from the sun?
      WTF is a “heat gun?”
Do you even know what “heat” is?
      Absolute temperature?
Understand physics at all? You can’t change those laws when they violate your common sense.
BTW, I do think AGW is a farce, so don’t think I’m arguing as an AGW proponent. It is people like you who make AGW skeptics look like complete idiots.
The “surface tension” argument is pseudoscience by a fringe group of people with little/no science education.

      • robert barclay says:

Lets be clear I’m not saying that surface tension blocks radiation what I’m saying is that it blocks physical heat from passing from the atmosphere into the ocean. In fact the irony of the situation is that if you want to heat water from above the only way to get heat into the water is to cover it with a floating object and apply the heat source to the floating object. The floating object breaks down surface tension and heat will get into the water. This is not a theory this is a readily provable fact. Things like Trenberth’s missing heat are explained by this phenomenon. It also very neatly explains why the temp isflatlining or dropping because the sun has gone into a funk and there is no back up.

    • NO!!! do the damn experiment.

  11. Chuck L says:

Well then, obviously, Hurricanes Hazel, Donna, Carol, Diane, 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane, 1938 Long Island Express, 1821 Hurricane, 1804 Snowcane, etc., did not occur since CO2 levels were too low to heat the ocean to make them Cat 2 or greater storms. Trenbarth and his fellow believers have transformed from scientists to Useful Idiots.
