Wasn’t this suppose to be the case in 2000, and then in 2005, and then 2010, and then 2012, and then by 2015, and then by 2020, and then by 2030?

Now by 2050? … why the delay? … sheeesh, government work, always behind schedule.

No one has built all the nuclear powered icebreakers that will be necessary to escort the ships.

Insect overlords from a distant galaxy could star on American Idol by 2021.

  4. Latitude says:

I guess this means he’s admitting that global warming has slowed……

Way to go out on a limb and predict the Arctic sea ice extent in 30 or 40 years! That is extremely verifiable /sarc. I can predict anything will happen, but I must admit I like Gator’s insect overlords.

  6. The Ol' sea dog. says:

In 1815, the UK Admiralty reported to the Royal Society to the effect that there was the possibility of the North West Passage becoming ice free….

  7. kbray in california says:

    Why wait ?
Nuclear weapons testing at the pole could open it up much sooner.
North Korea and Iran come to mind.
Never let a good crisis go to waste !

  8. Andy DC says:

You can’t prove or disprove any forecast way out in time, thus it is totally meaningless. But if you look at prior predictions, I would not take much stock in anything these people say.

  9. When eco worriers declare the north west passage is open they mean for a couple of weeks a year, maybe, but preferably if each cargo shipment has an ice breaker escort.

  10. Later, they’ll change their wording – they’ll say they meant the MAGNETIC north pole.

Remember, in 2008 we had the forecast from NSIDC’s Dr. Mark Serreze of an “ice free north pole” (he said ice may disappear in the summers within a couple of decades)

And also the claim from Jay Zwally, who said “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”

So, naturally, they pay no attention to WINTER ice. But just wait till summer. They’ll put out a daily “count-down” to summer minimum.

Classic Goddard! Short, sharp, funny and backed with real data!
