September 24, 2008Snow is so scarce today that most Virginia children probably don’t own a sled. But neighbors came to our home at Hickory Hill nearly every winter weekend to ride saucers and Flexible Flyers.
In those days, I recall my uncle, President Kennedy, standing erect as he rode a toboggan in his top coat, never faltering until he slid into the boxwood at the bottom of the hill. Once, my father, Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy, brought a delegation of visiting Eskimos home from the Justice Department for lunch at our house. They spent the afternoon building a great igloo in the deep snow in our backyard. My brothers and sisters played in the structure for several weeks before it began to melt.

not to make accusations against such an honorable person, but do Jr’s recollections pass the smell test?
There was a lot of snow in Virginia during the 1960s. Look at the graph.
Of course Warmingologists immediately dismiss any such recollections as “anecdotal,” unless of course it works for them. I’m more intrigued by THIS recollection:

Yup, his recollections are spot on. I was living in the mountainous part of Virginia during the 60’s, a place where people were comfortable with snow. I was out of school for 3 weeks in the winter of ’66-’67. Drifts covered one of the roads in our neighborhood to over 6 feet.
That being said, check out the graph for the winter of ’86-’87. It snowed for five Sundays in a row, 6 to 18 inches each time, starting in mid January. Dirty mounds of snow in the parking lots lasted until April. We used collapsed cardboard boxes to slide downhill because we didn’t have sleds, mainly because we weren’t kids anymore. It was awesome.
I suppose RFKJ can be happy, now. Major snow dump today in Virginia, particularly in the environs of DC.
There was more snow in the 1960’s than any other period before or since. That has more to do with cooling in the 60’s than warming during recent years.
We should look for a repeat going into the 20’s!

With all respect due the Kennedys, I’ll refrain from commenting while the Kennedy family grieves over the loss of their fellow multi-billionaire savior of the poor Hugo Chavez.
It is possible that heroin addiction addled his brain, and scrambled his memories.
