Pine forests burn naturally about every decade or so.
If you take out a 30 year mortgage on a home in the pine forest, you can expect to have your house burn three times during the life of the loan.
But at least you can call up your family and blame it on climate change.

As you’ve pointed out in an earlier thread, it would make sense for isolated homeowners in pine forests to cut down all trees within 100 yards of the house. I’d like to add: Ditto for Eucalypt forests in Australia.
Problem: Exercising common sense may run afoul of ‘well-intended’ environmental regulations. That was certainly a factor in the tragic deaths of nearly 200 people in the huge Victoria bushfire a few years ago.
One smart homeowner there thumbed his nose at the reguations, and it cost him $100 thousand. But he was able to save his house, and nobody in his immediate family was burned alive.

It’s called “defensible space”. Please note, defensible space can mean different things depending on where you are located. A house in a slash pine forest in Florida might have an entirely defensible space than a home in a redwood forest in Oregon or a hardwood forest in Vermont.
