My electricity bill is up this month, because I have been working a lot from home with two extra computers running. I’ve been in the apartment six months, and haven’t turned on the heat or the air conditioning once. Current temperature is 58 degrees inside, and I am hot.
I am wearing two very nice wool sweaters I got at the thrift shop for a total of less than $10, $5 wool socks, and a $3 knit cap which the local gangsta kids try to take from me when I am riding my bicycle. (Good luck with that.)
If I didn’t have to drive to work, my Maryland gasoline bill would be close to $0.
No, Tony, ‘adaptation’ (like you describe w/the socks and sweaters) is simply not feasible. You need to look at the global economy and figure out what damaging policies to enact that will throttle its GHG’s output as your new thermostat, and wait for Gaia to adjust to your wishes (while millions starve).
(In all seriousness, I grew up in Wisconsin. My dad kept the thermostat below 60. We wore socks, sweaters, and were just FINE all winter. We had south-facing windows and even on those January days when it didn’t get above zero F, the sun would heat that place up like you wouldn’t believe. Home insulation and wool work–well. I haven’t stepped outside my moms basement for years but according to NOAA Sea Level models the Patomac should be flooded by Arctic Ice… Right up to your doorstep… DOOM for everybody… Manhattan is already 20′ underwater thanks to a melting Greenland and CO2….

-15 C outside this AM in Calgary and both furnaces are in high gear trying to heat up the house after being off all night … I had been letting the temp inside fall to below 16 but it took too long to heat back up in the morning and seemed counter productive so now the downstairs is held at 18 and the upstairs can cool as much as it wants. November should be $400 or $500 for heating 🙁 although it is to get warmer here over the next several days as the core of the cold drifts to the east ( and south to my stateside friends).
One of the more interesting effects of the -20 C cold is that it totally kills the hybrid benefit of my Toyota Camry hybrid since the motor runs almost none stop to supply heat to the inside heater … this becomes noticeable as the temperature gets near freezing but is really obvious at -20. Only 5 more months until spring 😉
Yeh it was so cold outside this morning that I saw a bunch of teens with their pants pulled up!
We have yet to turn on the heat as well. My wife likes it cold. Some years, we never do.
Hey Tony! And yet… there are CAGW cultists who think that YOU are an evil destroyer of the environment, while their heroes (like Gore) fly private jets, have their limos idle for hours so that the temperature inside will stay comfortable, and live in houses big enough to support an entire elementary school.

I can’t think of a single domestic automobile manufactured since the middle 1980s that had or needed one of those “carbonized” air do-hickeys called a carburetor installed on its air intake. But I guess it is true about what they say about Urban Legends, they do die hard.
I have not yet run the heat at my condo. My neighbors must like it toasty, because my place stays plenty warm without it. In fact I am currently just wearing underwear.

In Yuma, Arizona I am penalized for not using enough electricity by our electric company. Currently, it amounts to only pennies a month, but I would not be surprised to see it go up in the future. I don’t know what Arizona “Public Service” is doing to those who are using solar panels for a substantial non-use of its electricity, but we saw to it that the Arizona Corporation Commission is now in Republican control this time. The Democrats running used worlds like “green” and “sustainable.

Got down to 49 in the house yesterday morning. Sun coming through my large south facing windows heated my CO2 up to 58, and nearly passed a tipping point.
How did that happen. Should the CO2 not have cooled?
I blame my house plants. 😉

Does keeping your house below 60f cause any condensation problems? You wouldn’t want damp in your computers.

We’ve already had -20 F. this year in Montana, and I have about 10 inches of snow in my yard. Last year was much worse though, starting with a blizzard about the 10th of October.
When everyone is using a lot of electric the rates go up because demand is up, makes sense. This summer Long Island was cooler than usual so people used their air conditioners a lot less and we were informed our rates were going up because the electric company didn’t sell enough. So I use as much as I want because I’m screwed either way.
