This is nothing compared to other foreign penetrations of American “national security agencies:”
There was the Mother Country–Great Britain–and how British influence on the American president during the Great War led to active (and secret) American participation during that war until President Woodrow Wilson got Congress to declare war on Imperial Germany, et al.
Just to show how well American politicians learned their lessons, FDR circumvented American neutrality laws and public opinion with active support of Britain against Nazi Germany including naval combat and aviation combat operations until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor forced America into the war.
“Losers” in this war for American public opinion were the Nazis–but if you read anything about the birth of America’s Central Intelligence Agency, the name Reinhard Gehlen comes up again and again. Without Gehlen and his Nazis, there wouldn’t have been any Central Intelligence Agency.
Since at least the Thirties Soviet penetration of American “national security agencies” was pervasive–J, Edgar Hoover or no J. Edgar Hoover. This penetration has become self-perpetuating to the point of re-writing history.
Anybody want to guess at the degree of “national security penetration” perpetrated by the nation of Israel? Does the name Pollard ring a bell?
But America is an equal opportunity whore. Without Saudi “national security penetration” American interference in the Middle East would be quite different.
China (Mao’s Red China) came up in the news during the Nineties for pervasive national security penetration.
The United States during the Twentieth Century has been an equal opportunity whore, spreading her legs for just about every faction world-wide. Some factions have enjoyed more success than others.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff, as reported Thursday by The Washington Times, opened their own channels of communication with the regime of Moammar Gadhafi to avoid military conflict. They told the Libyan government that Mrs. Clinton and the State Department were determined to pursue a military solution and were preventing crucial intelligence from getting to the president.
Several informed congressional voices were telling Mrs. Clinton to slow down, that all the intelligence services had concluded that there was no looming “humanitarian crisis” on which she proposed to go to war. There was no “weapons of mass destruction moment” available to her.
One of those voices was Dennis Kucinich, then a Democratic representative from Ohio, who said he undertook to have conversations with the Gadhafi regime. “I had facts that indicated America was headed once again into an intervention that was going to be disastrous,” he told the newspaper. “What was being said at the State Department … wasn’t so much about what happened, it was about what would happen. There was a distortion of events that were occurring in Libya to justify an intervention which was essentially wrong and illegal.” Both Robert Gates, who was the secretary of defense, and Adm. Michael Mullen, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, strongly opposed Mrs. Clinton’s recommendation to apply force.
Curiously, and dangerously, President Obama apparently did not get everyone in his administration to step back, that he would say who could speak to foreign governments on the behalf of the U.S. government. A voice on the tapes, identified as a “U.S. intelligence liaison working for the Pentagon,” said Mr. Obama had told members of Congress that “Libya is all Secretary Clinton’s matter.”

I think “American Thinker” is quite uneven as a news-and-commentary blog. Some really good articles sandwiched around conspiracy theory and obsession with anything to do with Israel.
There’s a current article there by Carol Brown: “Obama Defends Islam at All Cost” (sic) that’s pretty interesting, juxtaposing events with Obama’s Islam-apologetics.
