Ship Of Fools Talking About Getting Frozen In For The Winter

“We are not going anywhere”

They went to prove there is no ice in the Arctic, and are now surrounded by ice and talking about getting frozen in for the winter – while sitting around drinking Vodka.

  1. Lawrenec13 says:

If they are seriously even contemplating staying over the winter then that is nothing more than ‘mission fail’. Amazon might drone them out some vodka. Or are there currently enough drones in the world. As for staying which they may have to, I can’t see that crew deciding to wait it out.

Arctic ice now so receded that they have to navigate the arctic future responsibly . Also where is that Swiss cheese ice we heard about.

    • Martin says:

While they are waiting they could do far worse than to read “The Three Voyages of William Barents to the Arctic Regions 1594, 1595 and 1596”

Dr. Susan Crockford highlighted this account of *real* polar exploration in one of her early posts on her excellent blog polarbearscience.com

It is an amazing account of surviving a winter in the Arctic after their ship had become icebound and escaping in the spring in open rowing boats ……while all the time trying to avoid being eaten by polar bears !!

      • Jan_Vermeer says:

Thank you for reminding us at the Dutch Polar explorations. In the middle of the Little Ice Age they tried to find a way to Cathay using the northern route that supposedly had existed in earlier era’s , but failed . The adventures of Willem Barentsz are in every one’s memory if you are around 60 and older, and Dutch.

    • Colorado Wellington says:

Amazon drone? The Russians have been at it much longer. Swiss cheese is a simple add-on upsell.

  2. Gail Combs says:

Is it Politically Incorrect for me to ROTFLMAO?

    • AndyG55 says:

Just an impression, but I really don’t think you care too much about if something is politically correct or not. ;-)

      • Gail Combs says:

You are very very wrong Andy, I do care if something is PC. If it is I know it is a lie to be stomped into the ground. ?

        • dew says:

AGW and World Gov is nothing more than tyranny.Aug 1 and the ice is not as far gone as their graphs would explain it is.They want to charge for excrement each animal you own and miles on your odometer of you truck. Why they do not send Al Gore on this trip,by his self?

  3. Mr GrimNasty says:

Sergei is a Meerkat, not a Marmot, ship of fools indeed!

  4. Andy DC says:

All this, to try to prove that they can do what others did over 100 years ago. Which they can’t!

Thanks so much for proving our point, that significant global warming has not been taking place. The Arctic is not screaming, rather it is having a big belly laugh at your expense. If you care at all about your mental and physical well being, please pull the plug on this nonsense before it is too late!

    • Neal S says:

While I think it unlikely that they will actually be frozen in … I do think that short of tagging along behind a cooperative icebreaker, they are unlikely to make it through the northeast passage.

      • RAH says:

I’m not so sure that even tagging along behind an ice breaker would work for the small light hull of that vessel. It’s not like an icebreaker leaves completely ice chunk free open water in it’s wake.

      • Neal S says:

A ‘cooperative’ icebreaker could either tie them directly astern, or even worst case, they could be hoisted aloft by the larger boat.

    • dew says:

Are they going to prove there is more ice or are they going to prove there is less ice?If they are going to prove there is less ice,by all means have at it ole boy.Let all the AGW go on this trip.May they find out the truth of their own lie.

  5. Neal S says:

Apparently there ARE sponsors. If you watch till the end of the 3 minute video, they show these in the last 10 seconds or so. I do note that among these are Mamont and Mr. TROTTER’S as well as Honda, PV LOGIC, Masts & Rigging, Whale, Henri Lloyd, Imray, Holt, MedAire, Ecofan, Frances Gard films, Yuasa, St John Ambulance, RDT, Loophole Music. So, Hempleman Adams isn’t spending only his own money to make this attempt.

Maybe with Mamont and Mr. Trotter’s as sponsors, they may have been able to get all the Vodka they wanted. Could there be any commercial tie-in with their frequent consumption of ample amounts of booze?

  6. Billy Liar says:

I don’t think they know that there is ice up the other end of the little bay they are in. If they get the southerly wind they are hoping for this ice could easily blow up to the north end the bay and block them getting out of the bay (it has a very narrow entrance)!

Look for the white patch near the right hand end of the bay centered in this image:

    http://www.arctic.io/explorer/8/2016-08-01/9-N76.31818-E96.93407

    • Caleb says:

Good eyes. I didn’t notice that. I’ll bet that is where the ice came from, that they mentioned this morning. The wind shifted to the west, and that ice could very well have been blown east down the bay.

I wish they’d do a bit more science reporting. I’m curious about what the ice did to the air and water temperatures. Some pictures would be nice, as well. But perhaps I’m too impatient.

      • Stewart Pid says:

Caleb …. more science would cut into the happy hour activities and besides given their mission to promote GLO-BULL warming science is the last thing on their minds ;-)

      • Analitik says:

AndyG55 has been warning of this for a while – that they may get trapped from both ends if the pack ice is blown north.

But I’m sure Jim Hunt will be able to find clear water for them to navigate out .

  7. Colorado Wellington says:

So we stay on Pilota (Vasiliy) Makhotkino (1904 -1974) Island. Named after a famous Soviet Polar Pilot. He left the Soviet Union after the Revolution. He is the only person to have left the Country, but the Soviets left his name on the charts.

I think it’s so good Hempleman-Adams is using the extra time educating himself and reading Ben’s textbooks cover to cover. On top of it he gets history from Nikolay and Dennis so when he finally goes home he will have a really modern perspective of world affairs.

How nice the Soviets let Vasiliy Vasiliy Makhotkin’s name on the charts despite him being such a traitor to the Fatherland. Instead of being happy that the Party let him fly airplanes and be a hero of the Arctic Makhotkin got himself arrested in 1942 and sent to Gulag for 10 years.

He was just lucky they didn’t shoot him on the spot like they did with others. In 1937 they shot 18 of 20 aviation industry traitors for wanting to start a Fascist Party, with Andrei Tupolev and Vladimir Petlyakov being the two lucky ones to being sent to NKVD sharashka instead. So only because of Stalin’s magnanimity and wisdom did Makhotkin meet Tupolev and others in the Gulag forced labor system, where they had a grand old time developing airplanes like the TU-2. They even let them out of the sharaga in the 1950s, before their respective sentences were overturned, so good they had it. To top it of, the Party allowed them to keep designing airplanes and be famous is if they never did anything wrong.

These were the good old idealist times. What would Solzhenitsyn write about if he didn’t get such a fantastic human material?

  8. EternalOptimist says:

I think they should be worrying more about liver damage and less about bed sores

  9. CheshireRed says:

The Guardian’s George Monbiot says Arctic ice is on a catastrophic downward spiral. Someone tell the crew they’re only trapped by their imagination as there’s next to no ice there.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/aug/03/climate-crisis-media-relegates-greatest-challenge-hurtle-us-collapse-planet

    • BobbyK says:

I’m confused CheshireRed, your comments tend to go back and forth. Are you a skeptic or an alarmist? Cause that article seems to spout doom and gloom

      • CheshireRed says:

There was a hint of sarcasm in there somewhere. (Monbiot / Guardian are always bleating about ‘climate change’. It’s their religion.)
Me? I’m solidly sceptical and visit here regularly. It’s my fav’ site as Tony nails them with observable facts (often their own data) rather than merely opinion pieces.

        • BobbyK says:

Ok, good to know. As I’ve admitted on this site before. I myself am one who doesn’t really understand climate change and the science behind it. I try my hardest to be skeptic especially since I suffer from anxiety and I’m wanting to hold onto my sanity and have peace of mind. When I come across articles like the one you posted they scare me a lot. Especially when within the article itself and the comments below it gives a lot of reasons why supposedly the skeptics are wrong and don’t understand the science, or are just turning their heads the other way. So I just want to be clear, are you saying that the things he’s saying in that article about the hottest years ever, anthrax outbreak in Siberia due to infected corpses locked in permafrost since 1941 have thawed, India being hammered by droughts and flood, emergency drought in Africa, coral reefs around the world bleaching and dying, the claim that El Nino only accounts for one-fifth of the global temperature rise and that El Nino has passed but the records still fall just simply aren’t true? Those are some pretty big scary claims to just be throwing around to not be true. And then the comments below the article, a lot of them discuss the problems going on around the world due to climate change, even ones about current sea rise levels going on in Florida. Can it all be debunked as anti science or is there any truth into all that alarmism?

          • LexingtonGreen says:

Off course they are all BS. Just pick one and go back in time to see if they stand the test of climate history. You will find that all of the events have happened in the past and the Guardian folks are climate history deniers.

          • R. Shearer says:

It was hotter than now about 3/4 of the time in the last 8,000 years or so. Climate changes.

          • AndyG55 says:

“anthrax outbreak in Siberia due to infected corpses locked in permafrost since 1941 have thawed”

And how were those bodies buried ??

Let’s have a look at actual sea ice around Iceland.. this give a reasonable idea about what has happened with temperatures up there.

As you can see, the period from 1930 to 1960 had very little sea ice around Iceland, then the period 1960-1990 was actually has a whole lot more sea ice in comparison.

Around 1970 had much the same amount of sea ice around Iceland as the period coming out of the Little Ice Age. EXTREME would be the word to use.

It is those EXTREMNE sea ice levels that we have been slowly RECOVERING from.

Unfortunately, that recovery has probably stopped, and the next decade or so will see increasing levels of sea ice again. :-(

  10. AndyG55 says:

They still have time to get BACK TO MURMANSK.

Wintering where they are would be tantamount to suicide.

GET OUT NOW, SHIP OF FOOLS.

    • Gail Combs says:

      Now now Andy,

You do not want to deprive them of their Darwin Award now do you?

    • Rud Istvan says:

No, there is a better and more amusing outcome. Ice clears by say mid August. By then they will be near out of vodka and really cranky. They press on. And get trapped in the NW passage instead for the winter. There are very few haul outs unlike along the NE passage. So they will have to leave the boat in the ice for the winter. Don’t know if insurance covers that.
When trapped winter 2004-2005 on NE passage, they not only hauled out, they unstepped the mast and put mast and boat into a landed harbor barge, over which they then tack welded a steel deck. Container dry docked it, in effect. There are pictures on the Northabout website.

  11. Lawrenec13 says:

Besides the advantages of sat nav, communication with rescuers and the Russian Ice breakers standing by there are some strong parallels with the Franklin expedition with the only differences being Franklin’s crew needed lead poisoning to send them bonkers whereas the green lefty luvvies do it purely on ideology . Also Franklins men eventually succumbed to scurvy as well whereas these lemons have more risk of Cirrhosis. of the liver .

According to this wind map, it looks like it would be pushing ice from East Siberian toward Laptev and Vilkitsky and creating an even more impenetrable ice wall.

    http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Arctic?over=pressure_arrows&symbols=cities.forecast.dots&type=wind

    • Caleb says:

I like those maps, even if they often label lows as highs, and vice versa.

Their latest forecast came out and shows a decent gale brewing up right over the Laptev Sea. If the captain is looking at the same forecast I imagine he’ll stay put. After three days of storm cabin fever will be a danger, and they’ll all be ready to move.

  14. BobbyK says:

Some more specific reasons as to why the claims are BS would be extremely helpful. Sorry, option to reply to a comment above wasn’t available.

    • EternalOptimist says:

      Bobby K.
you don’t have to have a scientific background to wonder why sea level rise is being highlighted in Florida . If it were rising, wouldn’t it be rising everywhere?

    • AndyG55 says:

Bobby, In Florida, they have been pumping out groundwater for a long time..

      The land is sinking.

The actual rate of sea level change has remained basically constant at somewhere between 1.5 and 2mm per year for well over a century.

There is no sign of any acceleration in the tide gauge data, only when the totally un-scientific farce of splicing on heavily “adjusted” satellite sea level data with huge error margins.

    • AndyG55 says:

As for that 1/5 El Nino’s that is BS

In fact, the ONLY warming in the whole of the satellite temperature series comes from the two El Ninos in 1998 and 2015, and from Northern Hemisphere ocean oscillations

Series like GISS, HadCrut are heavily manipulated to specifically show a warming trend They do this by using urban heat centres as the basis to adjust rural temperatures, when it should be the other way around.
They also fudge using a thing called TOBs, which TH has shown has very little effect , but accounts for a very large percentage of the actual warming in the surface data. Tantamount to FRAUD.

ie.. the surface data is basically UNFIT for anything to do with global temperatures.

      • BobbyK says:

Ok, this is all very helpful,so what about anthrax outbreak in Siberia due to infected corpses locked in permafrost since 1941 have thawed, India being hammered by droughts and flood, emergency drought in Africa, and coral reefs around the world bleaching and dying?

        • RAH says:

So before 1941 there wasn’t permafrost there at the level those corpses? BTW Antrax in the spore form can last over a century and can even survive the temperatures of a wood fire. What does some local melting prove? Did the discovery of Otzi the ice man in 1991 result from global warming? I don’t think either are evidence of anything global. You know in 1978 here in central Indiana we had by far the worst blizzard of my 61 year life time. Nothing like it has happened since. The fact that it hasn’t is about as indicative of global warming as droughts and floods anywhere else. The fact is droughts, floods, blizzards, heat waves, and deadly cold snaps, terrible storms and such have happened throughout our history. Now though they hype them and point to them as being caused by man to help them institute control and their agendas.

        • AndyG55 says:

          Bobby, think.

          How were those bodies buried.

Do you think they were buried in permafrost ?

Bleaching a common occurrence, the GBR is already coming back strongly in the area that got bleached earlier this year. It was only near surface bleaching due to the lack of water flow.
And what they didn’t tell you was that the lower parts of the reef had actually expanded some 25-50 over the previous few decades.

India has always had droughts and floods. nothing unusual except that modern communications and CAGW scaremongering means you hear about it more nowadays.

        • gator69 says:

Working with infected animals or animal products

Most people who get sick from anthrax are exposed while working with infected animals or animal products such as wool, hides, or hair.

Inhalation anthrax can occur when a person inhales spores that are in the air (aerosolized) during the industrial processing of contaminated materials, such as wool, hides, or hair.

Cutaneous anthrax can occur when workers who handle contaminated animal products get spores in a cut or scrape on their skin.

Eating raw or undercooked meat from infected animals

People who eat raw or undercooked meat from infected animals may get sick with gastrointestinal anthrax . This usually occurs in countries where livestock are not routinely vaccinated against anthrax and food animals are not inspected prior to slaughter.

In the United States, gastrointestinal anthrax has rarely been reported. This is because yearly vaccination of livestock is recommended in areas of the United States where animals have had anthrax in the past, and because of the examination of all food animals, which ensures that they are healthy at the time of slaughter.

          Injecting heroin

A newly discovered type of anthrax is injection anthrax . This type of anthrax has been seen in northern Europe in people injecting heroin. So far, no cases of injection anthrax have been reported in the United States.

          http://www.cdc.gov/anthrax/basics/how-people-are-infected.html

Obviously anthrax thrived in Siberia in the past, when it was warmer than it is now. Nature is cyclical, and there is nothing new under the Sun, except lying POS Progressives out to rule the world.

  15. Griff says:

Well, the rest of the route, including the NW passage seems to be entirely clear of ice… no one seems to have mentioned that??

Anyway there is now no doubt ice is in decline and at a historic low/is not recovering to pre-2007 levels:

    (from NSIDC website)

“Earlier this month, NOAA at NSIDC published a new compilation of Arctic sea ice extent using a variety of historical sources, including whaling ship reports and several historical ice chart series from Alaska, the Russian Arctic, Canada, and Denmark. The compilation provides a synthesized mid-monthly estimate extending back to 1850. The study concludes that the current downward trend in sea ice has no precedent in duration or scale of ice loss since 1850. With the exception of the Bering Sea, none of the areas have seen sea ice extents as low as in the past decade. Historical periods that show a decrease in summertime sea ice extent in the Arctic, such as the late 1930’s and 1940’s, are smaller in magnitude than the current downward-trending period.”

    • AndyG55 says:

“no one seems to have mentioned that??”

How about we mention it when they get there.. bozo !!

    • AndyG55 says:

Data of sea ice around Iceland contradicts that farcical finding

1970’s was in fact a period of EXTREME sea ice extent

The loss from 1890 to 1920 was very obviously over a longer period and about the same rate as the loss from the EXTREMES of 1979, which was only just below the EXTREMES of the LIA.

    • AndyG55 says:

Just consider how DUMB you are going to look as the sea ice levels continue to INCREASE over the next few decades. ;-)

    • AndyG55 says:

We all know that NOAA will bend and twist EVERYTHING or ANYTHING to try to support their FRAUD.

They are the one of the CHIEF INSTIGATORS of this FRAUD and must do everything they can to keep up the PROPAGANDA LIES..

    • Lawrenec13 says:

Yes Griff and this escapade has proved without doubt that sea ice is no longer a problem and that Vodka is not just a drink to be enjoyed on the odd occasion. Science at work here.

    • RAH says:

Well they’re 10 days ahead of Ousland’s successful circumpolar expedition a few years ago. If they’re able to get through Laptev by then they should be in good shape.

Everything is proceeding as foretold. The 2015 dry run on the Northabout didn’t teach Hempleman-Adams enough. He should have studied the last days on Akademik Shokalskiy. The Russians will run out of booze last if at all. The girls will try to bribe them with food. Good luck with that.

    The sobering week has started.

    Ship’s Log 2016 Aug 04

Thursday evening 4th August, Nordenshel’da Archipelago just at the start of the Vilkitsky strait in the South Kara Sea

Every night we stay here, the night seems to get longer. Partly because everyone is going to bed earlier. That is probably because the wine and Vodka is getting scarce. Very scarce. We are down to birthday Vodka, then its anti freeze !

One thing you learn very quickly when you are flying (ballooning), is too check the weather, and re check before you take off. One very apt saying is, ‘Wish you were up there flying, when you are grounded, rather than flying wishing you were down on the ground’ That has happened to me a couple of times, and it’s horrible.

It is equally apt with Sailing. Last night the wind got up to 35 Knots, our little boat being rocked around in our sheltered Cove. The halyards clanking against the mast, it was a lovely feeling in a nice warm sleeping bag to think we were safe from the roaring seas outside, but it is frustrating not to get going. it feels like a winters day here. I actually think the scenery is more like Dartmoor than the Shetlands now.

Our new Canadian Charts today are depressing in that we would really have easy sailing at the moment, with little ice, I hope we get around fast enough before the re freeze.

Today is my Cooking day, very wisely, I swopped with Constance. I do her washing up and she cooks. Whilst we have plenty of water at the moment, we still clean in salt water and rinse in fresh hot water. Not used the marigolds yet, luckily, no upset stomachs yet. We are pretty religious about using the Anti bacterial solution. A lesson hard learnt in Tibet !!

So several days of hard wind in a South westerly direction, what will the charts tomorrow show ? My bet is the coast of the Laptev sea will be clear now, but the straight re- blocked. It will be nice to get going, but Denis Birthday on Sat. The girls are already planning his meal. Lucky boy, hope he shares it with the rest of us.

Bad planning for them to be running out of these essential supplies so early in this leg of the voyage. I wonder if they could beg one of the sponsors to have a resupply flight drop some barrels or kegs with adequate flotation and parachutes into their little sheltered cove at Ostrov Pilota Makhotkina. The cost could be somewhat offset with using the resupply run in advertising for Mamont and Mr. Trotter’s. I am sure there are sharp marketing folk that could figure out some way for those companies to benefit from the effort.

Might have to zoom out / scroll around to see them. Polar Ocean is identified as “Pleasure Craft” while the ship outside their cove is identified as “Tugs & Special craft” … hmmm wonder what that means.

Any chance they can get Vodka and Wine refills ???
