If they are seriously even contemplating staying over the winter then that is nothing more than ‘mission fail’. Amazon might drone them out some vodka. Or are there currently enough drones in the world. As for staying which they may have to, I can’t see that crew deciding to wait it out.

It is an amazing account of surviving a winter in the Arctic after their ship had become icebound and escaping in the spring in open rowing boats ……while all the time trying to avoid being eaten by polar bears !!
Thank you for reminding us at the Dutch Polar explorations. In the middle of the Little Ice Age they tried to find a way to Cathay using the northern route that supposedly had existed in earlier era’s , but failed . The adventures of Willem Barentsz are in every one’s memory if you are around 60 and older, and Dutch.

While I think it unlikely that they will actually be frozen in … I do think that short of tagging along behind a cooperative icebreaker, they are unlikely to make it through the northeast passage.
I’m not so sure that even tagging along behind an ice breaker would work for the small light hull of that vessel. It’s not like an icebreaker leaves completely ice chunk free open water in it’s wake.
A ‘cooperative’ icebreaker could either tie them directly astern, or even worst case, they could be hoisted aloft by the larger boat.

I don’t think they know that there is ice up the other end of the little bay they are in. If they get the southerly wind they are hoping for this ice could easily blow up to the north end the bay and block them getting out of the bay (it has a very narrow entrance)!

Good eyes. I didn’t notice that. I’ll bet that is where the ice came from, that they mentioned this morning. The wind shifted to the west, and that ice could very well have been blown east down the bay.
I wish they’d do a bit more science reporting. I’m curious about what the ice did to the air and water temperatures. Some pictures would be nice, as well. But perhaps I’m too impatient.

AndyG55 has been warning of this for a while – that they may get trapped from both ends if the pack ice is blown north.

I think it’s so good Hempleman-Adams is using the extra time educating himself and reading Ben’s textbooks cover to cover. On top of it he gets history from Nikolay and Dennis so when he finally goes home he will have a really modern perspective of world affairs.

To top it of, the Party allowed them to keep designing airplanes and be famous is if they never did anything wrong.

Ok, good to know. As I’ve admitted on this site before. I myself am one who doesn’t really understand climate change and the science behind it. I try my hardest to be skeptic especially since I suffer from anxiety and I’m wanting to hold onto my sanity and have peace of mind. When I come across articles like the one you posted they scare me a lot. Especially when within the article itself and the comments below it gives a lot of reasons why supposedly the skeptics are wrong and don’t understand the science, or are just turning their heads the other way. So I just want to be clear, are you saying that the things he’s saying in that article about the hottest years ever, anthrax outbreak in Siberia due to infected corpses locked in permafrost since 1941 have thawed, India being hammered by droughts and flood, emergency drought in Africa,coral reefs around the world bleaching and dying, the claim that El Nino only accounts for one-fifth of the global temperature rise and that El Nino has passed but the records still fall just simply aren’t true? Those are some pretty big scary claims to just be throwing around to not be true. And then the comments below the article, a lot of them discuss the problems going on around the world due to climate change, even ones about current sea rise levels going on in Florida. Can it all be debunked as anti science or is there any truth into all that alarmism?
Off course they are all BS. Just pick one and go back in time to see if they stand the test of climate history. You will find that all of the events have happened in the past and the Guardian folks are climate history deniers.
It was hotter than now about 3/4 of the time in the last 8,000 years or so. Climate changes.

Let’s have a look at actual sea ice around Iceland.. this give a reasonable idea about what has happened with temperatures up there.
As you can see, the period from 1930 to 1960 had very little sea ice around Iceland, then the period 1960-1990 was actually has a whole lot more sea ice in comparison.
Around 1970 had much the same amount of sea ice around Iceland as the period coming out of the Little Ice Age. EXTREME would be the word to use.
It is those EXTREMNE sea ice levels that we have been slowly RECOVERING from.
Unfortunately, that recovery has probably stopped, and the next decade or so will see increasing levels of sea ice again. :-(
They still have time to get BACK TO MURMANSK.
Wintering where they are would be tantamount to suicide.

No, there is a better and more amusing outcome. Ice clears by say mid August. By then they will be near out of vodka and really cranky. They press on. And get trapped in the NW passage instead for the winter. There are very few haul outs unlike along the NE passage. So they will have to leave the boat in the ice for the winter. Don’t know if insurance covers that.
When trapped winter 2004-2005 on NE passage, they not only hauled out, they unstepped the mast and put mast and boat into a landed harbor barge, over which they then tack welded a steel deck. Container dry docked it, in effect. There are pictures on the Northabout website.
Besides the advantages of sat nav, communication with rescuers and the Russian Ice breakers standing by there are some strong parallels with the Franklin expedition with the only differences being Franklin’s crew needed lead poisoning to send them bonkers whereas the green lefty luvvies do it purely on ideology . Also Franklins men eventually succumbed to scurvy as well whereas these lemons have more risk of Cirrhosis. of the liver .

According to this wind map, it looks like it would be pushing ice from East Siberian toward Laptev and Vilkitsky and creating an even more impenetrable ice wall.

I like those maps, even if they often label lows as highs, and vice versa.
Their latest forecast came out and shows a decent gale brewing up right over the Laptev Sea. If the captain is looking at the same forecast I imagine he’ll stay put. After three days of storm cabin fever will be a danger, and they’ll all be ready to move.
And the best direction to move would be where the yellow arrow is.. and keep going back to Murmansk.
Some more specific reasons as to why the claims are BS would be extremely helpful. Sorry, option to reply to a comment above wasn’t available.

The land is sinking.
The actual rate of sea level change has remained basically constant at somewhere between 1.5 and 2mm per year for well over a century.
There is no sign of any acceleration in the tide gauge data, only when the totally un-scientific farce of splicing on heavily “adjusted” satellite sea level data with huge error margins.
As for that 1/5 El Nino’s that is BS
In fact, the ONLY warming in the whole of the satellite temperature series comes from the two El Ninos in 1998 and 2015, and from Northern Hemisphere ocean oscillations
Series like GISS, HadCrut are heavily manipulated to specifically show a warming trend They do this by using urban heat centres as the basis to adjust rural temperatures, when it should be the other way around.
They also fudge using a thing called TOBs, which TH has shown has very little effect , but accounts for a very large percentage of the actual warming in the surface data. Tantamount to FRAUD.
ie.. the surface data is basically UNFIT for anything to do with global temperatures.

So before 1941 there wasn’t permafrost there at the level those corpses? BTW Antrax in the spore form can last over a century and can even survive the temperatures of a wood fire. What does some local melting prove? Did the discovery of Otzi the ice man in 1991 result from global warming? I don’t think either are evidence of anything global. You know in 1978 here in central Indiana we had by far the worst blizzard of my 61 year life time. Nothing like it has happened since. The fact that it hasn’t is about as indicative of global warming as droughts and floods anywhere else. The fact is droughts, floods, blizzards, heat waves, and deadly cold snaps, terrible storms and such have happened throughout our history. Now though they hype them and point to them as being caused by man to help them institute control and their agendas.

Bleaching a common occurrence, the GBR is already coming back strongly in the area that got bleached earlier this year. It was only near surface bleaching due to the lack of water flow.
And what they didn’t tell you was that the lower parts of the reef had actually expanded some 25-50 over the previous few decades.
India has always had droughts and floods. nothing unusual except that modern communications and CAGW scaremongering means you hear about it more nowadays.

The loss from 1890 to 1920 was very obviously over a longer period and about the same rate as the loss from the EXTREMES of 1979, which was only just below the EXTREMES of the LIA.
Just consider how DUMB you are going to look as the sea ice levels continue to INCREASE over the next few decades. ;-)

Well they’re 10 days ahead of Ousland’s successful circumpolar expedition a few years ago. If they’re able to get through Laptev by then they should be in good shape.
Everything is proceeding as foretold. The 2015 dry run on the Northabout didn’t teach Hempleman-Adams enough. He should have studied the last days on Akademik Shokalskiy. The Russians will run out of booze last if at all. The girls will try to bribe them with food. Good luck with that.
The sobering week has started.
Bad planning for them to be running out of these essential supplies so early in this leg of the voyage. I wonder if they could beg one of the sponsors to have a resupply flight drop some barrels or kegs with adequate flotation and parachutes into their little sheltered cove at Ostrov Pilota Makhotkina. The cost could be somewhat offset with using the resupply run in advertising for Mamont and Mr. Trotter’s. I am sure there are sharp marketing folk that could figure out some way for those companies to benefit from the effort.
