Matthew Vs. Hazel

The last category 4 hurricane to hit the US during October was Hazel in 1954. But the weather in 1954 was nothing like this year. On October 5, 1954 much of the southeastern US was over 100 degrees. This years’s forecasts are about 25 degrees cooler.

I’m not a forecaster, but this difference indicates that the current weather patterns are not comparable to what they were when Hazel hit.

Hazel hit western Haiti on October 11, 1954 leaving a death toll estimated to be between 400 and 1,000.

Hazel moved North to hit the U.S. and was the strongest and only Category 4 hurricane to ever hit the North Carolina coast.

I’m guessing you may have seen it already, but for the benefit of other readers:

Which gives Matthew a close enough to zero chance of making landfall in Florida. Maybe Ga or SC

The latest model runs and NHC guidance have Matthew grazing the Florida, SC, NC coasts then spinning sharply eastward. Probably won’t be CAT4 by the time it potentially makes landfall, but with hurricanes, nothing is certain!
