Massive Expansion Of Thick Arctic Ice Over The Past Decade

Nine years ago, there was no thick ice in the Chukchi, Bering or East Siberian Seas. Now there is a lot of thick ice there.

DMI Modelled ice thickness

The extent of multi-year ice has more than doubled since 2008, and is up 20% from last year.

How do these charts help stop this? Or are they meant to increase this problem? Either way, Ms Griff is happy to help to starve millions.

    • Sunsettommy says:

At least you did something,Jimmy never does, you showed the entire acrtic on your maps.

It would have helped if you make a chart showing the trend, to post one more map from 2008,where Tony started his.

      Congratulations!

      • Griff says:

Well the archive back that far is not available online, or I would.

but you do know why tony picked 2008 and why it shows less ice?

Because 2007 was one of the record melt years and it did not recover as much over winter.

Picking 2009, 2013 or 2006 would show a different picture.

        • AndyG55 says:

So you admit that you are LYING yet again.

          Sliming away yet again.

Such a putrid little tape worm , aren’t you.

        • Gail Combs says:

Griffy says “…Because 2007 was one of the record melt years…”

No Griffy as a showed you before NASA said it was due to WINDS blowing the ice OUT OF THE ARCTIC and not due to the ice melting IN THE ARCTIC.

A team led by Son Nghiem of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., studied trends in Arctic perennial ice cover by combining data from NASA’s Quick Scatterometer (QuikScat) satellite with a computing model based on observations of sea ice drift from the International Arctic Buoy Programme. QuikScat can identify and map different classes of sea ice, including older, thicker perennial ice and younger, thinner seasonal ice.

“Unusual atmospheric conditions set up wind patterns that compressed the sea ice, loaded it into the Transpolar Drift Stream and then sped its flow out of the Arctic,” said Son Nghiem of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and leader of the study. When that sea ice reached lower latitudes, it rapidly melted in the warmer waters.

Tony Heller has also addressed the issue of a change in wind patterns.

    • Gerald Machnee says:

      Griff:
Still waiting for your papers on Measurements of warming caused by CO2. You have had a lot of time to find them.

    • AndyG55 says:

Tell us griff, is there anywhere in that forum where they discuss the Arctic sea ice back before the extreme levels of the late 1970’s, which were up therewith those of the LIA?

Is there any discussion of pre-LIA sea ice to bring some PERSPECTIVE into their worryings?

Do any of them actually KNOW that the current levels are actually anomalously HIGH for the Holocene.. or are they all IGNORANT of that as well?

Or are they all just DENIERS of climate change like you are?

      • Griff says:

Of course those who study sea ice understand what the past levels were -and more importantly why.

Why was there a low in the Eemian? Because of orbital factors.

Are those orbital factors in play today?

        No.

so we concentrate on: what is the level now, trend now and reason for that trend now.

your view on those 3 things? and your evidence?

        • AndyG55 says:

Evidence has been posted MANY time. You are not capable of even comprehending it.

And you seem very confused about what the Holocene and Eemian were, and when they were. Parading your massive IGNORANCE yet again.

We are not talking about a period 130,000 years ago.

The first 3/4 of the HOLOCENE has been shown to have regular zero summer sea ice.

That fact absolutely DESTROYS your whinging and carrying on about current Arctic sea ice.

        • AndyG55 says:

“Of course those who study sea ice understand what the past levels were”

Well you certainly haven’t got even the vaguest clue.

But then, you having a sub-50 IQ does leave you at a distinct disadvantage for learning anything at all about anything.

But do keep parading your ignorance for ALL to see.

You do irreparable damage to the AGW scam cause.

NOBODY wants to seem as ignorant as you do.

    • AndyG55 says:

Love the way the colouring on Griff’s charts makes the 2m thick sea ice all but disappear.

You have to look very closely to see that they actually show an increase like the DMI charts do.

      Wonderful propaganda.

      • AndyG55 says:

Charts made to sell to the unquestioning denizens of the Arctic worrier sites. The lap-it-all-up non-thinking child-minds.

        The DENIERS of climate change.

      • Jim Hunt says:

What are you blathering on about Andy?

Would you care to illustrate your point for us?

        • gator69 says:

I have given you plenty of illustrations, of starving children, and I have explained that your alarmism is taking precious resourcves away from those who actually need them to survicve. And yet you ignore them, and you continue to rant about natural cycles of ice while 21,000 perish each day, needlessy.

Why is it that AGW believer Bjorn Lomborg gets it, along with the vast majority of this planet, and yet you do not?

Is it stupidity, or something else?

Do you hate poor brown people Genocide Jim, or are you stupid?

          • Griff says:

Yes, why have you done that?

what connection between starving children is there and reporting arctic sea ice levels and trends accurately?

I take it you followed my suggestion on donating to the kids in N Nigeria starving due to terrorist actions?

          • gator69 says:

Ms Griff, I tell the truth, that’s what I do. Then, I make a monthly donation to starving kids in third world countries through a Christian charity that gets .97 cents of every dollar to the kids.

You, OTOH, promote hysteria on climate change, and help to cause trillions to be diverted away from kids who starve to death by the millions annually.

This is about the sixth time I have explained this to you Ms Griff, I have provided the figures, and backed my assertions with nobel laureate approval.

Now, if you value human life over ice, cease and desist your alarmist BS immediately, or admit you are a murderous ghoul who cares more about your agenda than human life.

There is no debate Ms Griff. Life, or ice.

          • AndyG55 says:

            “starving due to terrorist actions?”

griff is so NAIVE that he thinks money goes to the victims.

No, moron, it goes to those who support the terrorism.

Your ignorance makes you a massive danger to society, griff.

          • gator69 says:

Ms Griff is at odds with the world. The UN poll I posted above shows that even internet access ranks above climate change!

Climate chnage is dead last among the real concerns of the world. Seven million starve annually, and Ms Griff promotes this genocide on a daily basis.

            Can you say criminally insane?

        • AndyG55 says:

The fact that you can’t see what I am talking about CONFIRMS what I am saying.

You have PROVEN my point. Thanks Jimbo.

          Go eat another sock !!!

Would you care to tell us what CIS says about multi-year sea ice. Come on, Jimbo you cowardly slimebag?

    • AndyG55 says:

      Quite funny really..

All it took was a change in colour scale to fool griff completely !!

“Colouring-in” is obviously something he hasn’t got to yet.

Keep trying griff. Its like a dumb comedy act.

    • John Smith says:

      Griff,
What does your perfect world look like?
      Would increasing ice be good?
Just one of the things I don’t get about the climate change debate.
We can worry about the future being warmer.
Would you not worry about the future getting colder?
I can see no evidence of unprecedented changes.
Actually, our current situation seems unusually stable by my reading of general history.

      • AndyG55 says:

He has his little inner-city leftist ghetto basement… nice and warm due to fossil fuel, paid for by granny.

As far as he is concerned, those people trying to exist in freezing climates , just don’t matter.

A tiny bit of sea ice matters many times more to him than people in northern Russia.

        https://www.rt.com/news/russia-freeze-cold-temperature-379/

      • gregole says:

        +1
        My thoughts exactly.

      • Griff says:

The world and the climate do what they do… I don’t have ‘feelings’ about the evidence that shows what the climate is doing, in terms of a preference.

What I do know is that there is a reason why the climate tips one way or another and there are consequences from the direction it takes for human society.

The decline in the arctic sea ice will have profound effects on weather/climate.

The decline is unprecedented, in as much as it is now far lower than the low point of the last century and trending down further

        • AndyG55 says:

          Still DENYING climate history.

You are a LIAR and a FRAUDSTER, griff.

        • AndyG55 says:

          “I don’t have ‘feelings’ ”

          We know that.

You care more for a minor slow-down in sea ice than you do for people who suffered and die in Russia.

You are quickly gaining a reputation as one of the lowest forms of human-hating garbage on the internet.

And I bet you are proud of it.

You really do have some serious mental issues, griff.

Let’s hope those around you don’t suffer too much.

        • AndyG55 says:

          “The decline is unprecedented”

          More total and absolute BS.

Fabricated, unsupportable BS is the only thing you ever seem come out with.

You live in a whacked-out hallucinogenic nightmare of your own creation.

        • Gail Combs says:

Griffy says: “…The decline is unprecedented, in as much as it is now far lower than the low point of the last century and trending down further…”

Griffy is very fearful of an increase in temperature.

So lets actually look at that.

First a 3°C increase in temperature.
          Has it happened before?
          YES!

From Temperature and precipitation history of the Arctic
          climate(DOT)envsci.rutgers.edu/robock/MillerArctic.pdf

Solar energy reached a summer maximum (9% higher than at present) ~11 ka ago and has been decreasing since then, primarily in response to the precession of the equinoxes. The extra energy elevated early Holocene summer temperatures throughout the Arctic 1-3°C above 20th century averages, enough to completely melt many small glaciers throughout the Arctic, although the Greenland Ice Sheet was only slightly smaller than at present.”

So in the Holocene 11,000 years ago the Arctic was 3°C warmer.

What was the earth like 11,000 years ago?

Stone-Age graveyard reveals life in a “green Sahara”

…Dating back 10,000 years and called Gobero after the Tuareg name for the area, the site was brimming with skeletons of humans and animals including large fish and crocodiles, researchers said.

Gobero is hidden away within Niger’s forbidding Ténéré Desert, known to local Tuareg nomads as a “desert within a desert.”….

The discovery of the lakeside graveyard—said to represent two successive human populations divided by more than 1,000 years—is reported in the September issue of National Geographic magazine and the Aug. 14 issue of the research journal PLoS One.

As they explored the site, researchers said, they tiptoed among dozens of fossilized human skeletons laid bare on the surface of an ancient dune field by the hot Saharan wind. Jawbones still clenched nearly full sets of teeth; a tiny hand reached up through the sand, its finger bones intact. On the surface lay harpoon points, potsherds, beads and stone tools. The site was pristine, apparently never visited.

“Everywhere you turned, there were bones belonging to animals that don’t live in the desert,” said Sereno. “I realized we were in the green Sahara.”
From Egypt in the east to Mauritania in the west, lakes with lush margins dotted the formerly parched landscape, drawing animals, fish and eventually people.

This site now archived shows maps of vegetation from the Wisconsin Ice Age through the Holocene.
by Adams J.M. & Faure H. (1997) (eds.), QEN members. Review and Atlas of Palaeovegetation: Preliminary land ecosystem maps of the world since the Last Glacial Maximum. Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN, USA. This web site now resides at http://geoecho.snu.ac.kr/nerc.html — (Doesn’t load for me)

Summary map of vegetation cover at 8,000 14C years BP. By 8,000 14C y.a., the Earth was under a full interglacial climate, with conditions warmer and moister than present in many parts of the world. Tropical forest in Africa (and probably also Asia) was expanded in area, and the areas of desert in Africa and Asia were much reduced.

What does a WARMER world look like??? (The Holocene when the Arctic was ICE FREE IN SUMMER)

        • Gail Combs says:

WHAT does the Present (potential) Holocene look like?
          NOTE THE EXPANDED DESERTS GRIFFY!

        • Gail Combs says:

What happens if CO2 is NOT a Magic Gas, Lisiecki & Raymo are correct and the Holocene ENDS. Or even goes bumping along in the almost Ice Box state?

NOTE WHEN IT GETS COLDER DESERTS EXPAND!

          • Gail Combs says:

Oh, and Griffy, not being dumb, I moved to the area in the mid south of the USA shown as green where I can see a nuclear plant out my window.

        • Latitude says:

“there is a reason why the climate tips one way or another”…

Obviously, the set point for this planet is a lot colder.
          Climate science says so.
CO2, water vapor, etc makes it warm enough we can live here.

Only a complete idiot would want to reduce those things.

        • gator69 says:

The decline in the arctic sea ice will have profound effects on weather/climate.

Will it kill 21,000 people every single day? Because that won’t be enough to offset the hundreds of millions you alarmists have already wiped out.

So Ms Griif, what is your point, exactly?

  1. Gail Combs says:

    Here Fishy, Fishy Fishy…

    Or is that a TROLL.

    • gator69 says:

No, someting closer to a self absorbed being willing to throw the rest of humanity into the pits of death and despair for…

    • AndyG55 says:

Waiting for the CIS chart again. ;-)

I wonder what CIS say about ‘all of Arctic’ thick sea ice?

For some reason, no-one has ever told us. ;-)

  2. CheshireRed says:

This season a ‘Super-hot Arctic’ has been every alarmist climate hack’s must-have article accessory. Wonder what’ll be in fashion next year – ‘melting oceans’, ‘dry air’ or ‘chaotic currents’? Perhaps ‘rotten ice’ will make a comeback, or maybe it’s time for ‘sea rise Armageddon’? Whatever they invent it’s sure to be horrific and definitely worse than previously thought. Stay tuned folks.

    • AndyG55 says:

Arctic sea ice is actually doing remarkably well considering the large “less cold” Jet Stream anomaly that was sitting over the Franz Josef region for most of the winter.

If there is no minor El Nino next year, we could see quite large gains. !

      Wouldn’t that be fun :-)

    • Griff says:

But it was anomalously hot this winter, wasn’t it?

      • AndyG55 says:

You really are a stupid moron, griff.

        Russia was anomalously cold.

It was a Jet Stream weather event.

This has been explained to you many time.

WHY do you remain so WILFULLY IGNORANT !!

And why do you care so much more about a tiny slow-down in Arctic sea ice, and not give a stuff about people dying because of the Russian cold.

        https://www.rt.com/news/russia-freeze-cold-temperature-379/

What sort of anti-human piece of slime are you ?????

Are you vying with Jimbo for “human hater of the year” ??

You really are a disgusting piece of rodent like low-life !!

  3. toorightmate says:

There is no ice at the North Pole.
Al Gore told me this secret 20 years ago.
So if anyone says there is ice at the North Pole, they must be fibbing.
Because my mate Al doesn’t tell fibs.

  4. Jim Hunt says:

At the risk of repeating myself:

This morning I received a reply to my email last week to the organisation that generates the OSI-SAF ice type data:

“The product we produce is not for climate change studies. It is an operational product intended for use in weather and ocean models, and for monitoring of the current sea ice situation.”

    Ring any bells MASIE fans?

  5. gator69 says:

I am so glad that Ms Griff & Co continue to ruin their brand by arguing with me about whether or not we should continue starving poor brown kids.

Yes, why have you done that?

This is what I do Ms Griff, I show the world what absolute ghoulish sh*theads you alarmists are, and thankfully you guys are too f*cking stupid to shut the Hell up. So I then can (and do) show these threads to fence sitters, and they always come down on my (the correct and moral) side.

Keep up the great work guys! You are creating more hard skeptics than I could ever hope to!

    • AndyG55 says:

Yep, just keep them posting.. showing that they only CARE about their flaccid AGW scam agenda…

….and couldn’t give a stuff about any sort of human suffering around the world.

They really are among the lowest form of human existence on the planet.
