Heatwave Of July 13, 1954

On this date in 1954 it was 120 degrees in Kansas, 115 degrees in Oklahoma and Arkansas 113 degrees in Missouri and Nebraska, and a cool 112 degrees in Texas. One hundred temperatures covered the country from coast to coast. The average maximum temperature across the US was an astonishing 95 degrees.

    Looking at the map here in Milwaukee where it’s “Cooler by the Lake” we dodged that one.

    And I was in Presho, SD, on the 13th that year. I do remember how hot it was.

    That heatwave was one of my first weather memories, that was quickly followed by Hurricane Hazel during the following October.
