Hansen use to constantly lecture us that disappearing sea ice was going to amplify global warming and destroy the planet. Only problem is that polar sea ice area has been above normal for nearly 18 months.
NOAA says that April was the hottest on record globally, but somehow the heat forgot to melt the ice.
There is a principle in nature named “survival of the fittest.” All of the normal, zero-degree-melting, variety of polar ice is gone. What we have now is anomalous ice that will only melt if heated far above zero degrees.
We have reached a tippling point, marked by the killing of many polar beers!
That’s an interesting hypothesis but it ignores the other competing polar species: water.
Arctic and Antarctic water is also toughened up by the harsh environment. It is a wild water used to extreme cold. It has to live with those temperatures day and night. Especially night. This is not your sissified garden variety tap water that city folks know. No, Sir! This water is not gonna go belly up and start freezing just because the temperatures dropped a couple of lousy degrees below freezing point. It will man up and remain liquid.
I don’t disagree with you argument that polar ice is also tough and a different kind of ice than the soft, urban kind folks get from a vending machine or buy in a grocery store. It is wild ice. But there is a brutal survival competition going on between wild polar water and wild polar ice that is very different from the temperate zone. This competition has the potential to threaten the Earth’s balance and is poorly understood.
More research is required.
I think you just solved the climate mysteries, Colorado. It’s all about survival of the species. The winner, between ice and water, will then take on CO2.

I am always please to discuss a subject with someone who has even deeper and more esoteric knowledge than myself! About this need for more research though… Is there some way we can just skip over the research and go straight to the funding?
The heat didn’t “forget to heat the ice”. Oh no! it was too busy heating the planet..
Must be all that CO2 snow down there that is freezing out of the atmosphere…….

You obviously missed Trenbeth’s memo – Heat doesn’t melt ice anymore until it comes back from vacation at the bottom of the ocean !
Well, the Great Lakes did finally melt this year! 🙂 So April was hottest ever. Otherwise, the lakes would be frozen forever….
Your forgetting the 10 foot floods caused by all the melting ice.
Yabbut something bad might happen in a few millennia, so we have to pauperize ourselves now, starting with all the countries that will die off fastest!
