NASA is the same organization that had multiple embarrassing rocket explosions after Eisenhower renamed them from NACA…

At what point did NASA squander its credibility?

  2. omanuel says:

For the past sixty-eight years the US National Academy of Sciences has directed public funds to the research agencies (NASA, EPA, DOE, etc) that will disguise government deceit as “consensus, settled science:”

  3. Password protected says:

And if the arctic ices and the northern hemisphere temps drop? Still global warming?

    • Jason Calley says:

      Yes, still global warming.

CAGW is the current witch craze. Hot, cold, wet, dry — it does not matter. If it happens, CAGW is causing it.

  4. RossP says:

I cannot believe fellow scientists do not “get up in arms” with this sort of BS and yes, I notice this one is from 2004 , but it is becoming and more common.
All it says to me is that those who approve the allocation of the Govt. funds must do it blind folded.

And now they have this on their webpage:

NASA – What’s the Difference Between Weather and Climate?
    February 1, 2005

The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere “behaves” over relatively long periods of time.

When we talk about climate change, we talk about changes in long-term averages of daily weather. Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Children today in most areas of the country haven’t experienced those kinds of dreadful snow-packed winters, except for the Northeastern U.S. in January 2005. The change in recent winter snows indicate that the climate has changed since their parents were young.

If summers seem hotter lately, then the recent climate may have changed. In various parts of the world, some people have even noticed that springtime comes earlier now than it did 30 years ago. An earlier springtime is indicative of a possible change in the climate.

Doesn't it just a person the warm fuzzies to see how scientific this agency is? How there is no bias, how clearly there is nothing but the pursuit of scientific knowledge?

You know, my sarcasm is overwhelmed by my disgust … and that sensation of almost throwing up that stops about halfway and just hangs there.

    • wyoskeptic says:

Doesn’t it just give a person the …

    • I walked to kindergarden in Ohio at six, and the snow was up to my waist. Of course, that was only about 12 inches. Last Winter, however, the snow was above my waist, and I am over six feet tall. 2013 was the coldest and snowiest winter I have ever experienced. Have I just disproven global warming?

      • Truthseeker says:

If you were only 12 inches tall at 6 years of age, you would have been the shortest person there by some margin. Also if you are now over 6 feet tall that is a 500% increase since you were six …

Sounds like some data adjustment is going on …

        • Tim says:

Obviously you have a reading comprehension problem, he said the snow was ABOUT a foot deep and is obviously making the point that when you are young lots of things appear bigger and grander than they would to a more mature person.

      • Yes, but you just proved Climate Change!

  6. David A says:

“Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Is this real? They should be sued for the liars they are. NH snow cover has zero trend.

    • Joe P. says:

David A. “Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Children today in most areas of the country haven’t experienced those kinds of dreadful snow-packed winters ..

I have heard same thing from some older generational relatives mentioned on how cold they remember/perceived (except from my older relatives who could remember record hot 1930s have been dead a while now, and had cooling dip late 40s to 70s, warming after, 80s to 90s, now reverse). When I was a little kid, a storm with three feet of snow went up to my head, now that I am older the exact same snow storm goes up just to my waste, is the exact same snow storm today half as bad or old one twice worse as high as snow was relative to my size as I can remember?

My parent’s and grandparents also walked longer distances to go to school in depth of winter than kids today with school buses and parents dropping off in cars and school cancelled if half inch of snow since liability of school system. When people get older they also have lower metabolism, need to adjust heat at house, so maybe more “extremes” as gov says in works forecasted for future despite documented tend at oppose for last few decades is believable. Kids now spend less time outside too – so I guess they have to trust “adjusted” temperature record from NASA/NOAA, and get upward bias over time both ways, trust lies on temperature record put out as propaganda by gov to get funding for gov agencies or fuel a political agenda think will be popular to avert an environmental catastrophe, own observational recollection as getting older and taller, or even talking to elders who when through same getting taller as exact same snow seemed relatively smaller over time as grew up.

Do not worry, with several short-term oscillations occurring now (solar cycle 24 smaller, reduced radiation hitting earth, ocean oscillation, magnetic field), good chance will be colder next few years so kids can have a more balanced environment, that is of course ignoring the chance that climatic change alarmists will shift again to global cooling and put out same propaganda again to NYT picked up as catchy news stories and similar future recommendations as before to try as prescription to melt polar ice caps with nukes to avert environmental cooling catastrophe, give it ten years, politics and myopic beliefs could rubber band.

I also hear botox injections warm the face, could be some warming bias there to, but State Department would be in denial, higher ups likely to blame on some video for propaganda reasons before election, or put out new video like Holdren on how global warming causes polar vortex and colder since warmer, well ten years and will be putting out more cartoons looking like science for kids so they can learn whatever collective in power wants to tell.

There is a polarization between reality and what people rationally think getting worse with a better working fine tuned machine, largely gov funded, on latter manipulating opinion, like small natural changes climate could reverse or oscillate.

      • au1corsair says:

You forgot two things: being chased by wolf packs (back when wolves were all but extinct and “didn’t attack humans) and two points that are 500 feet apart now were 40 miles apart 40 years ago and up-hill coming and going…

Being “fact-challenged” is an ancient disorder not limited to senior citizens!

    • Gail Combs says:

What about my dog? She would climb up the snow and sit on the roof of the garage. No not in Alaska, in the Syracuse NY area.

Me? I would step OVER the phone lines to play in the field across the street. At the time I weight 40 lbs wore clothes for two year olds and was still looking UP at door knobs a realization that thoroughly disgusted me at age seven.

    • They should be sued for the liars they are.

Absolutely not! I stand with Biscein on this. Most high ambitions run against reality:

    • mjc says:

Well, my kids will have those stories to tell their grandchildren…because, I’ve got the pictures to prove they trudged through waist deep snow…in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (not counting what Sandy dumped on us…) and 2013…in all of those years, according to my yardstick and picnic table, I had 100+ inches of the white stuff…now had it all stuck around for the entire winter…

  7. David A says:

I bet a pixel count on Greenland would show it growing by 2007. To my eye it looks like it is encroaching into the ice. (more land = less ice.)

  8. WJohn says:

NASA is a humane and caring employer.
Instead of sacking all those numpties involved in launch failures, Shuttle disasters, Mars mission incidents caused by mixing up your Imperial and metric units, etc, etc, NASA re-employs them in their growing non Space enterprises where the harm they can do is minimised and usually not discovered until the perpetrators are safely retired or have adopted new jobs with EPA or with similar stupidity tolerant organisations..
At some point in the near future the letters” –AS-“ will be reassigned a new meaning , maybe “Alarmist Studies” or “Abstract Science”, as the proportion of their business (and income) associated with actual real space science decreases and that done using models in super-duper computers increases.

    • Andy Oz says:

NASA could have outsourced all their Climate Alarmism to Marshall Applewhite or more recently Bill McKibben. Imagine how much funding they could have saved.

  9. Joe P. says:

Rocket science, that is most stupid thing, global warming causes global cooling and possible ice age, yes you can not make this up.
Guess we have the advantage 10 years later with soil and dust samples of knowing short Dryas cooling step breaking entering short inter-glacial warming in now was more a likely a comet hitting Earth’s atmosphere, but still, Arctic is land locked with little global ocean current to interact with, the “Great Conveyor Belt” is more Antarctic which is surrounded by ocean and acting like refrigerator http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/seaice.anomaly.antarctic.png
But still, if talking of sea ice, and not Greenland (fresh water dumped as vs. salty which is reverse), this is just a surface layer which 70% melts and refreezes annually so relative to Arctic Ocean just surface and thousandths of 1% similar to trace gasses like CO2 in atmosphere which is 99.9% Nitrogen and Oxygen and Argon, your glass has a very thin layer of ice on top surface during winter which mostly melts every summer.
“If the Great Conveyor Belt suddenly stops, the cause might not matter. Europeans will have other things on their minds–like how to grow crops in snow. Now is the time to find out, while it’s merely a chilling possibility.”
    – lets see, global warming melting ice cap causing a 10°C fall in temps, no one would live in Europe growing crops in snow since the polar ice cap would likely then reach all the way from the North Pole very close to the Mediterranean. Rocket science – global warming can cause global cooling at same time, Arctic ice cap melts sending cold water into North Atlantic ocean causing same ice cap to simultaneously grow engulfing most of Europe in deep freeze. Did a brainwashed high school intern at NASA write this in 2004?

NASA is where an astrophysicist like James Hansen can leap out of his area of expertise, drop into climate science, and attain more credibility than hard working experts like Bill Gray. I just don’t get it.

  13. omanuel says:

NASA engineering was a great achievement.

NASA scientists were controlled by the US National Academy of Sciences reviewing the budgets of federal agencies for Congress.

The first analysis of solar-wind implanted elements in surfaces of lunar soils and breccias in 1969 revealed an enrichment of the light-weight isotopes from mass separation in the Sun. Today, forty-five years later, NASA scientists still deny this obvious fact: Solar mass fractionation.

That is why the Climategate worm continues to turn, but we know that Al Gore and the UN’s IPCC were only smalltime players in the 1945-1946 plot to save the world from nuclear annihilation by taking totalitarian control of society and forbidding public knowledge of the energy stored in cores of nuclei, stars and galaxies:

You know, I worked with a guy who previously worked at designing some automation systems for Nasa. He left when he couldn’t take the BS any more. That was the late eighties. Apparently things have only gone down hill since.

I truly respect the accomplishments of the early Nasa, and even now, a few things they do deserve respect. But this here, simply boggles my mind:

Is the climate of the whole Earth really changing?
    Cartoon of a confused-looking boy.

Yes! Earth has been getting warmer—and fast.

Global climate is the average climate over the entire planet. And the reason scientists and folks like you are concerned is that Earth’s global climate is changing. The planet is warming up fast—faster than at any time scientists know about from their studies of Earth’s entire history.
    ….
    What is climate?

“Climate” describes conditions over the long term and over an entire region.

Climate is the big picture. It is the big picture of temperatures, rainfall, wind and other conditions over a larger region and a longer time than weather. For example, the weather was rainy in Phoenix, Arizona, last week. But this city usually gets only about 7 inches of rain each year. So the climate for Arizona is dry. Much of Southern California also has a dry, desert climate. Brazil has a tropical climate, because it’s warm and rains there a lot.

    …..

Do we care if Earth is getting warmer?
The whole planet Earth as seen from space.

The whole Earth as seen from 22,300 miles away, out in space.

Yes, we care! After all, Earth is our spaceship.

It carries us on a 583-million-mile cruise around the Sun every year. It even has its own “force field.” Earth has a magnetic field that protects us from killer radiation and brutal solar wind. For its life-support system, Earth has all the air, water, and food we need.

Just like astronauts on a long space voyage, we need to monitor all our “ship’s” vital functions and keep our Earth “ship shape.”

    ….

    Does what we do matter?
Cartoon of Planet Earth heald in two cupped human hands.

Earth’s fate is in our hands.

Everything that happens here affects something over there.

Earth has its own control system. The oceans, the land, the air, the plants and animals, and the energy from the Sun all affect each other to make everything work in harmony. Nothing changes in one place without changing something in another place. The overall effect gives us our global climate.

    ….
What is making Earth’s climate warmer?
Black and white photo of smokestacks belching smoke.

How can we take better care of our planet?

Scientists have discovered that humans are causing this warming.

But how do they know that? What are we doing that could cause the whole planet to get warmer? And how could warming happen so fast? What will happen to people and other living things if the planet keeps getting warmer? And what can we do to slow down or stop the warming?

A government agency, supposedly dedicated to the proposition of finding scientific answers to problems, to exploring space and what do you find on their webpages? Propaganda so freaking blatant that the old Pravada would have been ashamed to print it. And all directed at children.

You want a real education? Click on the buttons on the left to play nice climate games like “climate trivia” to find out if you are you a climate guru or “power up” to light up a whole city with renewable energy. Or click on the button for “Carbon travels” and learn that riding a bicycle adds no greenhouse gases to the atmosphere or that a smokestack releases greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the atmosphere.

This is one site you have to visit to truly believe. You cannot have any idea without actually looking at it.

Gag me with a spoon. I have been a recovered alcoholic for twenty years now and after looking at this site, I want to go get drunk so bad it hurts.

  15. Curt says:

So as soon as they recognize even a potential negative feedback, they assert it must be so strong as to completely overshoot the mark. This way, they can claim that both positive (amplifying) and negative feedbacks are destablizing. Brilliant!…

  16. Dave1billion says:

It seems that NASA forgot about the “uphill – both ways!” part of their anecdotal proof of global warming.

  17. Shazaam says:

Seems there is a kickstarter campaign to help NASA get one prediction correct.

The “Help Obama Fund WW-III and WW-IV” clip is (I hope) a fun parody.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-sdO6pwVHQ

After some intense WW-III warming, it will indeed get very, very cold. And NASA will finally get a climate prediction right!!
