Eric Steig Gets 27 Million Pinocchios | Real Science

Climate scientists constantly complain to me that they are misquoted by the press. I would suggest that they make every effort to stop that from happening.

Maybe if they started telling the truth they wouldn’t have that problem.

  2. jmrSudbury says:

Steve, you quoted what he said and included the title of the article. When I read your post, there was no way I thought that Eric said the 1 in 27 million stat. The only allusion to that claim is the title of your post. Reading the original article, it was clear that the quote came from the ‘climate research and journalism group’ Climate Central. The case you laid out clearly showed that he was wrong to suggest that ‘global warming continues apace.’ Instead of discussing the data, he simply whined about an apparent miss attribution of a quote.

  3. If I am looking for a quote in an article I look for quotation marks.
It really is science just like plus and minus signs.
If there are no quotation marks it is not a quote.

  4. Jimmy Haigh says:

Why does Steig’s avatar look like a swastika?

  5. Ben Vorlich says:

Isn’t this a Lance Armstrong defence “I’ve never tested positive”?

He just says that he didn’t say it, not that he thinks it’s wrong, misleading or even mildly inaccurate.

  6. SMS says:

Whoa…….I was looking at the time stamp on the comment and it’s a month and a half after the previous last comment. When you drop comments so late in the game you aren’t looking for a conversation. But if Eric Steig wants a conversation he can start commenting now on this post.

It would be nice to have a respectable conversation with someone rather than continue to beat up on Chris and his nonsense.

    • Gail Combs says:

We used to have Hopeless. At least Chris shows a bit more intelligence and can actually carry on a sensible conversation.

The article that started this reads like bad sci-fi, and begins with anonymous “scientists” who either lied, or were misquoted.

Although it may not have been warm where you live, scientists announced Friday that 2014 was the Earth’s hottest year since record-keeping began in 1880

The article, or the scientists, failed to go on and say that they were only partially “confident” of this “hottest year ever”, and on top of that, it wasn’t.

    NOAA Global Analysis- Annual 1997
The global average temperature of 62.45 degrees Fahrenheit for 1997 was the warmest year on record, surpassing the previous record set in 1995 by 0.15 degrees Fahrenheit

    NOAA Global Analysis- Annual 2014
The average temperature for the year [2014] was 0.69°C (1.24°F) above the 20th century average of 13.9°C (57.0°F) [ie 58.24F] , beating the previous record warmth of 2010 and 2005 by 0.04°C (0.07°F).

    62.45F in 1997
    58.24F in 2014

    Not even close.

  8. Neal S says:

So did he contact mashable or washington post about this supposed misquote? But what about http://www.climatecentral.org/news/a-broken-record-2014-hottest-year-18546 or http://www.climatecentral.org/news/odds-record-warm-years-18578 ? Clearly someone at climate central is claiming this. Maybe they need to more carefully attribute who writes what article there, or perhaps this is just a way of being able to hide behind some partial anonymity.

But of course, without temperature fiddling, thirteen of the 15 hottest years did NOT happen in the last 15 years.

  9. Frank K. says:

Well, if Eric Steig does decide to comment here, perhaps he can discuss this plot:

  10. Steve Case says:

So I followed the link to the Mashable article where they say:

Nine of the ten warmest years have occurred since the year 2000, … blah blah blah …

    You know what?

    According to GISS data
    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata_v3/GLB.Ts+dSST.txt
by 1948 ten of the previous eleven years were the hottest on record.

In other words, the bullshit never stops.

  11. Steve Case says:

And the decade 1940 to 1950 was the hottest decade on record up ’til that time.

The watch-me-pull a rabbit out of my hat misdirection bullshit and other forms of crappola & propaganda is absolutely never ending.

  12. DHF says:

This is the only reference to Eric Steig I find in the linked article at Mashable:
(Mashable title: “There is less than a 1-in-27 million chance that Earth’s record hot streak is natural”)
    …………..

Separately, Eric Steig, a professor at the University of Washington, told Mashable that satellite data’s main flaw is that it doesn’t tell us much about the changing climate where we live — that is, at the surface.

“We live on the surface, and the surface temperature records are the most global and longest term record we have,” he said. “The satellite records measure something different — not the surface, where we live but averages over a substantial vertical part of the atmosphere. The records are short, and subject to greater uncertainties than the surface temperature data.”
    “………….
Both the title of your post: “Eric Steig Gets 27 Million Pinocchios”
    and the ingress:
“There is less than a 1-in-27 million chance that Earth’s record hot streak is natural”
Is disconnected from the content referring to comments by Eric Steig.

I fully agree with Eric Steig, your post seems to be misleading and seems to indicate that Eric said something he did not say. It is also likely that Eric did not even know the title of the article when he made his comment to Mashable.

There are more than enough real quotes out there which can be falsified or demonstrated to contain logical fallacies. There is not need to make any false attributions.

  13. talldave2 says:

No doubt someone was misquoted here as well:

“In light of the frequent claims of their being a “pause” or slowdown in global temperature, the 2014 data provides a lesson in statistics. It will hopefully remind people what we’ve always known — what the textbooks have always said — that ones must use more than a decade or even 15 years of data to say anything about climate trends,” he told Mashable in an email.

NOAA statement on models in 2008: “The simulations rule out (at the 95% level) zero trends for intervals of15 yr or more, suggesting that an observed absence of warming of this duration is needed to create a discrepancy with the expected present-day warming rate.” There have now been 17 years without warming.
