Julienne Forecasts Record Ice Melt

If the same amount of melting continues throughout July it will be the fastest rate since records began in 1979.

‘That’s relatively fast,’ NSIDC research scientist Julienne Stroeve told LiveScience.

‘Unless things change in the next few weeks, we might have a new record for July.

‘Certainly overall, we think the ice is thinner overall leading up to this season than it was in 2007.’

Stroeve said that clearer skies over the Arctic have also allowed the sun’s rays to bake the sheets of ice which are usually protected by thick cloud cover.

The ice expert added that cooler temperatures for the rest of July could decrease the rate at which the ice is melting.

‘It’s too early to say we’re going to have a new record low but I would say it’s certainly possible with the way things have been going,’ he added.

A little gender confusion at the Daily Mail, perhaps?

    well duh…..
It’s certainly possible that we would have warmcold, wetdry, droughtflood, and snowrain too…

…it’s called climate change, it’s normal, get used to it

Whole lotta mitigating goin’ on…. still, at least a real scientist clearly states the caveats and uncertainties regarding an ongoing evaluation. The babe-factor doesn’t hurt either 🙂

Steve, you have made a point about the ice having increased in both thickness and extent. (Multi-year ice does tend to increase in thickness, right?) Since Dr. Stroeve is undoubtedly aware of this factor, does here statement mean that she is discounting it or that the multi-year ice extent is less than that of the 2007 record melt?

“Stroeve said that clearer skies over the Arctic have also allowed the sun’s rays to bake the sheets of ice which are usually protected by thick cloud cover.”

You mean there are other things besides global warming that might lead to polar ice melt? What a shock that is!

lol, Goodness, they can’t tell whether Julienne is a male or female? It shows the level of reporting these days. Without intending offense, the name is somewhat androgynous,(I’m sure male spellings are different) I never knew until I saw her pic. But, I think I’m seeing why skeptics are having a difficulty making headway. Consider the the resent views of Drs. Stroeve and Hayhoe here at RealScience, and then consider spokespersons for our learned perspective, ………. click.

Ice melt has decreased recently with more lows up there and extra snow cover. One of the north pole webcams is getting rather sleepy with all the grey

So I don’t think 2007 will be beaten.

These people have a way of phrasing things that makes you wonder …

“Stroeve said that clearer skies over the Arctic have also allowed the sun’s rays to bake the sheets of ice which are usually protected by thick cloud cover.”

They really must believe that seasonal ice, mostly created each winter, is something that needs to be preserved. It’s water for God’s sake! We have tons of it and it ain’t going nowhere, whether it is solid or liquid.

Ice does not get lost! It cannot get lost unless we put it on rockets and blast it into space.

Is that the picture you keep in your wallet?
She’s grown up a bit since then.
