I Hate Cars

I got hit by a car riding my bicycle in the bike lane again today. The bike was wrecked. Second time this year this has happened.

Both times I had the right of way and the driver was distracted. Fortunately, I don’t have any serious injuries.

That sucks, cars and bikes don’t mix, they are more dangerous then a global warmer denier

Put up your C.V. before it’s too late!
Glad you’re OK. My son rides fairly seriously and I worry till he’s back- no cycle lanes in Wales.

  3. suyts says:

Glad to hear you’re ok. I really believe driver license tests should be much more stringent.

  4. Scarlet Pumpernickel says:

I think only Netherlands has got it right, with the protected bike paths everywhere to keep cars and bikes separate, a bike is no match for a car

  5. Rick K says:

Stay safe Steve. At least you didn’t get hit by global warming. That stuff’s deadly, I hear…

  6. peterhodges says:

    glad your okay steve.

i was bike commuter for a few years back in college…i just assumed i was invisible and they were all out to get me. one of my buddies got hit…standing at a red light

    Get off my road:P

i put on lots of Kms/year, and sure enough this summer, had 2 drivers totally miss seeing me, one was reaching down for his cell phone or something, and the other was making a left turn and I had to slam on the brakes. Yes, cyclist and cars don’t mix well, and cyclists come out second every time….
glad to hear you safe though.

My hypothesis based on the relevant statistics is that the odds are against you living to old age Steve unless you drop the habit pronto.

It’s not just a matter of bad drivers, most drivers naturally are instinctively looking out for the predominate road risks associated with other vehicles and don’t always notice anomalous bicycles.

maybe a nice florescent vest with a strobe/// sorry to hear, I’m amazed you can walk away from these one on ones you are having. there isn’t much padding between you and the asphalt.

  11. Bruce of Newcastle says:

I am sorry to hear about this – I gave up riding to work for many years for similar reasons. Recently though I’m glad to say my town has been building a lot of dedicated bike/pedestrian paths. Some on old railway rights of way, a new one on a ’30’s vintage steam tram right of way is due to open in a few weeks.

On the other hand bike path policy in Sydney is horrible and has caused no end of bad blood. So bad that some drivers have been chasing riders off bike lanes on purpose.

I don’t know what the answer is, I just try to stay off the road most times.

  12. Airframe Eng says:

I quit riding in the street for this reason. Too many crazies. I don’t even like being on the road in a car.

It would be nice if Bike paths were separate. That could make it worth doing. I think strobes can be good and bad. Anything that draws attention draws drunkards, and sometimes they drive directly into it.

  13. Thon Brocket says:

Did you perhaps glimpse the shade of an eminent Victorian scientist in the instant of your up-tipping? “Evolution in action”, he mutters into his beard on such occasions. “Get an SUV.”

  14. Lazarus says:

Glad to hear that you are OK. As a fellow cyclist who bike is my main method of daily transport I understand the perils posed by other road users. Fortunately my route only involves short spells on roads as my area is fairly well serviced by cycle tracks.

Take care and I hope you recover your losses.

Bikes and pedestrians don’t mix either. Once, on a rare visit to London, I tried crossing the road at Oxford Circus. Avoiding the cars was no problem, I can hear them coming, but I was literally flattened by a bike. 🙂 His bike was wrecked – had to chain it to a lamp post and get the tube home. I was fine though, in case you’re worrying. The accident was totally my fault, and he was very nice about it, after he’d stopped shouting. 🙂

  16. Joe Kanu says:

In 40 years of bicycling and weekend motorcycling I’ve learned a bit about urban survival. You can wear anything you like and it makes no difference. They won’t see you. I ride with the assumption that I am invisible. I tried flashing lights and such but it seems to attract them much like flashing lights attract hordes in all the Zombie games.
Oddly trucks and SUVs aren’t the issue for me, it’s small car drivers and most particularly the hybrids that try to kill me most often. They sit with their self assurance that they have gone green at about knee height and can’t see jack. With their proximity to the ground and the thick fog of smugness that surrounds them, they are driving virtually blind and are therefore the most dangerous and unpredictable on the road.
I can deal with the cowboy in the pickup easily. I can hear his dual glass-packs a mile away. I know he hates me and my kind but since I know his tactics, he’s easy to deal with. Little old ladies who can’t see over the wheel of the lead-sled are also easy… just stay off the sidewalk and you’ll easily avoid them. Camaro guy is the same as pickup truck cowboy but his weapon is likely to break down before he gets close enough to inflict harm. Delivery truck guy isn’t so bad driving but once he stops he likes to get out and walk around in the road. Delivery guy is usually several hundred pounds overweight but can move into your path with surprising speed. His heart will give out after 3 steps so he’s also easy to avoid. Yep. it’s the one’s in the hybrids that’ll kill ya.
