Many of the world’s leading climate authorities forecast an ice-free Arctic this year, but at this point the odds of that happening appear to have diminished slightly.

James Hansen : ‘This is the last chance’
6/23/2008
“We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. “The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”
Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

The alarming loss of sea ice which has grown worse each summer over the past several decades, has taken a sharp turn for the worse: this year the loss is right in the middle, the most resilient part of the ice cover. This could lead to a completely ice-free Arctic Ocean by September.
Unprecedented hole is growing in Arctic sea ice – Fairfax Climate Watch
Steve, this is off-topic but so urgent that I had to post it.
Once again, I just landed from a Sacramento-Denver flight. Steve, the environmental catastrophe befalling the Rocky Mountains at the moment is utterly horrifying. The unprecedented, never-so-hot and never-so-large western wildfires this summer/fall have obviously left an incredibly thick layer of bright white ash on all the peaks. There is a risk that this ash could slide downhill, taking innocent wildlife and leftists with it. We need to get the National Park Service to barricade/block any place that one might see this terrifying sight.
I heard the President was going to tour the area, since he owns it, and that they found a gap in the ash where his helicopter could land. Observers said it was as if the President’s mere presence created an opening in the ash. Could this mean that truly the President is an “ash-hole”?
Another gorgeous day here–headed to NYC in an hour.
I understand that the Hansen was misquoted, it should be –
“We see that twelve martinis before lunch, and a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. Then continuing loudly and waving his arms,
“Teh first martini is the ffirst tipping point and it’s o-occurring exactly the way they said it would.” He said, just before he slumped to the floor….”
His minder clarified the statement later.
