Here’s one trend California is behind on: rising sea levels.

For the last 23 years, ocean levels around the world have climbed by about 3 inches on average, and NASA scientists say the sea will continue to rise as warming temperatures cause ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica to melt.

But California, and the rest of the western United States, has actually seen ocean levels fall. That’s about to change, thanks to a shift in weather patterns, and scientists are sounding the alarm.

According to Deborah Kurtz, the physical science program manager for Kenai Fjords National Park where Obama hiked Tuesday,the Exit Glacier, which flows from the Harding Icefield has retreated 800 feet since 2008, 187 in 2014 alone.

“Climate is the primary driver of ice loss,” she said, adding that Harding Icefield is 10% smaller than it was in 1950. She called what has been seen in recent years an “unprecedented rate of warming.”

One of the most photographed men in the world again wielded an iPhone on Tuesday to snap some pictures himself.

“It is spectacular,” he said at Exit. “We want to make sure that our grandkids can see this.”

The glacier retreated 187 feet in 2014, which was the average rate from 1894-1899, and 60% of the rate from 1914-1917. In other words, glacial retreat has slowed considerably over the last 100 years. Deborah Kurtz is lying.

Alaska has cooled 0.1 degrees since 1977, which Kurtz calls “unprecedented warming.” Again, Deborah Kurtz is lying.

The Little Ice Age (LIA) was a time of global cooling from approximately 1350 to 1870 AD. During this time glaciers expanded in the northern regions, moving down the mountains and scouring the vegetation that had been in the valleys below. Park Service personnel recently discovered evidence of a buried forest dating back to at least 1170 AD high in the Forelands near the current glacier’s edge.

Exit Glacier advanced from the Harding Icefield during the Little Ice Age, burying this existing forest and advancing to a maximum marked by the terminal moraine dated to 1815. With the warming trend of the 1800s, Exit Glacier began to retreat from its 1815 maximum. Very slowly, the glacier retreated 230 feet (70 m) from 1815 to 1889, averaging about 3.1 ft/year (1 m/yr) (see Table 1). The glacier then retreated much more rapidly between 1889-1899, interspersed with periods of stagnation, which are marked by linear moraines (1889, 1891, 1894 and 1899). During this time, the glacier retreated 1680 ft (512 m), about 168 ft/yr (51 m/yr). The next fifteen years was a period of a slow but s teady retreat, as the g lacier retreated only 42 ft/yr (13 m/yr). In the years between 1914 and 1917, Exit Glacier experienced its most rapid retreat. In just 3 years, the glacier retreated 908 ft (277 m) or almost a foot per day. From 1917 to 1973, Exit Glacier continued to retreat with periods of slow to moderate retreat. There were five periods of retreat, with the ice melting fastest between 1961 and 1968 (115 ft/yr or 35 m/yr).

Meteorological summer is over. For the third year in a row, the number of 100 degree readings and their areal extent were near record lows in the US.

The frequency of 100 degree days in the US is down by 40% over the last century. Less than 3% of readings were over 100F, compared to more than 15% in 1936.

Similarly, the percentage of 90 degree days has also plummeted, and near record lows.

Just over 25% of stations reached 100 degrees sometime during the summer, compared to 75% in 1936. The area reaching 100 degrees is down 30% over the past century.

NASA claims that earth is on track for three feet of sea level rise by the year 2100, even though their own data shows twelve inches and the NOAA data shows seven inches.
