Open letter to environmentalists and world leaders says wind and solar power are not enough to diminish carbon emissions

Some of the world’s top climate scientists say wind and solar energy won’t be enough to head off extreme global warming, and they’re asking environmentalists to support the development of safer nuclear power as one way to cut fossil fuel pollution.

Four scientists who have played a key role in alerting the public to the dangers of climate change sent letters Sunday to leading environmental groups and politicians around the world. The letter, an advance copy of which was given to the Associated Press, urges a crucial discussion on the role of nuclear power in fighting climate change.

The letter signers are James Hansen, a former top NASA scientist; Ken Caldeira, of the Carnegie Institution; Kerry Emanuel, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Tom Wigley, of the University of Adelaide in Australia.

Environmentalists are terrified of nuclear power and fossil fuels, and now their heroes tell them that their only remaining hope is also useless. Time for Kool-Aid?

But at least one newspaper got it right in 1871. The Brisbane Courier recognized that belief in “climate change” reflected nothing other than human stupidity.

IS NOT HONESTY THE WISEST POLICY?

It is wrong to mutilate or suppress the record of an observation of a phenomenon of nature, but it is also wrong to make a bad use of the record. In fact, it is the misuse of meteorological data, not the observing or publishing, that constitutes a crime against the community. Observation and careful research are to be encouraged as useful. Misrepresentations are to be avoided as harmful. The “Independent Press “as the” Voice of the People “should be not only “Vox Populi” but ” Vox Dei “, repressing all cheats and hoaxes, defending the truth and the best interests of the whole nation as against the self-interest of a few.

Is not honesty the best policy?

Well behaved skeptics are supposed to nod their head and say :

Yes, humans have caused 0.7C warming by adding greenhouse gases, but future warming will be less than the models forecast

Or you could be an actual scientist and say

The global warming claims made by government scientists are almost completely due to UHI effects, high solar activity in the 20th century, and data tampering by government scientists.

The global temperature record claimed by government agencies is fraudulent. It shows the cold period of the early 1970s as being much warmer than the warm period of the early 1920s.

The US Weather Bureau said that the Arctic was rapidly melting during the 1920’s.

THE CHANGING ARCTIC.

The Arctic seems to be warming up. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers who sail the seas about Spitsbergen and the eastern Arctic, all point to a radical change in climatic conditions, and hitherto unheard-of high temperatures in that part of the earth’s surface.

Many old landmarks are so changed as to be unrecognizable- Where formerly great masses of ice were found, there ore now often moraines, accumulations of earth and stones. At many points where glaciers formerly extended far into the sea they have entirely disappeared.

The change in temperature, says Captain Ingebrigtsen, has also brought about great change in the flora and fauna of the Arctic. This summer he sought for white fish in Spitsbergen waters. Formerly great shoals of them were found there. This year he saw none, although he visited all the old fishing grounds.

There were few seal in Spitsbergen waters this year, the catch being far under the average. This, however, did not surprise the captain- He pointed out that formerly the waters about Spitsbergen held an even summer temperature of about 3 Celsius; this year recorded temperatures up to 15, and last winter the ocean did not freeze over even on the north coast of Spitsbergen.

The CIA said that the Arctic was rapidly freezing up during the 1970?s

Early in the 1970s, a series of adverse climatic anomalies occurred. …. The world’s snow and ice cover increased by 10-15%.

It is not credible the the 1920s Arctic melt occurred at a lower temperature than the 1970s Arctic freeze. Science has actual rules, which must be adhered to – even by government scientists and well behaved skeptics.

In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences published the graph below, showing that the 1920’s were warmer than the 1970’s. That changed after Hansen got his hands on the temperature data in the 1980’s.

If the present refuses to get warmer, then the past must become cooler

As of 1999, NASA showed that US temperatures peaked in the 1930s, and had been declining sharply ever since. Note that 1934 was more than half a degree warmer than 1998 in the 1999 GISS graph below.

Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

NOAA and CRU also reported no warming in the US, during the century prior to 1989.

Last week, scientists from the United States Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that a study of temperature readings for the contiguous 48 states over the last century showed there had been no significant change in average temperature over that period. Dr. (Phil) Jones said in a telephone interview today that his own results for the 48 states agreed with those findings.

But that just wasn’t going to do, so they started tampering with the US temperature data. With each successive version they cool the past further, and warm  later temperatures further. They now show 1998 0.1ºC warmer than 1934, compared to 0.25ºC cooler in the 2000 version, and more than 0.5C cooler in the 1999 version (top image above.)

The graph below shows how the slope has steadily increased in the 2000, 2001, 2012 and 2013 versions of the same 1930-1999 data.

Snowfall is steadily increasing here along the Colorado Front Range, with this year being the snowiest on record to date here in Fort Collins.

Temperatures have been declining this century, as the missing heat sinks to the bottom of nearby Horsetooth Reservoir.

The big Arctic story this year is the increase in thick ice in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The animation below alternates between 11/3/2012 and 11/3/2013, and shows only 1+ metre thick ice south on 80N. This is the ice which is has sent Arctic alarmists into full anti-science mode.

In Fort Collins we  had our snowiest January-October on record, and it is continuing into November.
