Foreign-backed al-Qaeda-linked terrorists fighting the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad have gained control over the Christian village of Maalula, reports say.
According to the so-called Syrian Observatory as well as the residents of the historic town located some 70 kilometers northeast of the capital, Damascus, the militants are currently in control of the entire village.
The British-based group said the militants have sent reinforcement to the area, forcing Syrian Army to leave the mountain village.
“The rebels are inside Maalula, all of Maalula. The government troops have pulled out of Maalula,” a resident said on condition of anonymity.
The reports come after days of clashes between Syrian army forces and militants mostly from the al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front in the Christian village.
Many of the town’s 5,000 Aramaic-speaking residents have fled their homes since the militants, known for killing minorities, arrived in the area.

Penguins and Global Warming Even penguins are affected by the climate change that takes place out there.
Due to global warming around the world, their natural environment is affected. Those species that live in the extremely cold regions depend on the ice because it is what they walk on. When it is melting at fast rates it completely changes their natural environment. At the same time it can make them vulnerable to predators that they were protected from in the past due to the thick sheets of ice.
Scientists believe that half of the population of penguins in the Antarctic region has been depleted in the last 50 years due to the climate change. It is the species known as the Emperor Penguins that have seen the largest losses. This is due to the warming trends continuing for several years. There is plenty of change that takes place over that span of time, and most of it isn’t positive when it comes to the natural habitat of the penguins.
There has been no warming in Antarctica for 30 years, and sea ice is at record highs.

Afghan officials have said an apparent Nato air strike has killed 15 people – nine of them civilians, including women and children – in an eastern province where the Taliban are strong. Nato said 10 militants had died in the strike, and that it had no reports of any civilian deaths.
The Watapur district chief Zalmai Yousefi confirmed the air strike. He also said 15 people had been killed, including women and children.
NATO automatically defines anyone they kill as being a militant.
The Nato spokeswoman 1st Lieutenant AnnMarie Annicelli confirmed that the military alliance had carried out a “precision strike” that killed 10 “enemy forces”, but that it had received no reports of any civilians dying in the air strike. Annicelli had no immediate details on who exactly the dead were or what prompted the air strike.
Around 1,000 Afghan civilians have been killed and more than 2,000 wounded in the first half of this year – a huge portion of them in insurgent attacks – according to the United Nations. That marked a 24% increase in casualties compared to the same period last year.

Obama says that he has very detailed evidence that Assad gassed Syrian children, going back to three days before the attack – as the US traced all the events in real time. No explanation as to why the US didn’t warn their Syrian freedom fighters that they were about to be gassed.
Obama also said that a UN investigation is useless, because the Syrian government has destroyed all the very detailed evidence which the US currently has. Obama apparently felt that the best way he could help the UN investigation last week was to rush the investigators out by threatening to bomb the area where they were investigating.
It has now been 362 days since Benghazi, and Obama has done everything in his power to block all investigations into what happened there – and says that it took two weeks for the best intelligence to determine that it wasn’t a spontaneous YouTube protest.
The current plan is to keep showing pictures of dead children over and over again, in hopes that will supersede any attempt at intelligent debate about who did it, and about what would be a sensible way to move forward. The only option which Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama can conceive of is to start launching Tomahawk missiles in a Saudi financed two day extended war to get rid of Assad, which is not about regime change.
