Rumsfeld calls Obama’s Syria strategy ‘mindless’

Former Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld says he’s confounded by how the Obama administration has gone about explaining why a strike is in the USA’s national interest.

“There really hasn’t been any indication from the administration as to what our national interest is with respect to this particular situation,” Rumsfeld, secretary of Defense when the U.S. attacked Iraq in 2003, said Wednesday evening on the Fox Business Network.

The most important issues in the region, Rumsfeld said, are “Iran’s nuclear program and the relationship between Iran and Syria — the (Bashar) Assad regime — with respect to funding terrorists that go around killing innocent men, women and children, including Americans.”

David Cameron woke up the other day and asked himself what was the stupidest possible thing he could do. Eureka! He could align himself with Barack Obama in an effort to start WWIII.

A row has erupted over No 10’s claim Labour is giving “succour” to Syria’s regime by not backing the prime minister over military action there.  Labour is demanding an apology for what it describes as “infantile” comments.  Downing Street is reported to be furious that Labour leader Ed Miliband has not backed David Cameron’s motion paving the way for military strikes.

James Hansen : ‘This is the last chance’

“We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. “The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”

Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

The alarming loss of sea ice which has grown worse each summer over the past several decades, has taken a sharp turn for the worse: this year the loss is right in the middle, the most resilient part of the ice cover. This could lead to a completely ice-free Arctic Ocean by September.

A U.S. strike in Syria may have severe repercussions. It may get the United States enmeshed in an inter-ethnic Syrian conflict. It might spark an international crisis with anti-American superpowers Russia and China. It could cause Bashar Assad to act in an irrational manner against his pro-American neighbors. 

And still, the anticipated American strike is a strike of no choice.
