There has been a massive increase in Arctic sea ice since the first week of August 2012 (green area below) – but it is worse than it seems. Note that almost all of the new ice is on the Alaska side of the Arctic, This means that almost all of the remaining ice in a few weeks will also survive the winter (i.e. not get transported out the Fram Strait.)
By next spring, it is all multi-year ice and thus harder to melt going into next summer.

CBS News reports that a large-scale attack may be imminent as al-Qaeda terrorists in the Arabian Peninsula already have their orders and could be in place for execution of the alleged plot.
Why don’t they just ask the CIA guys who drew up the plans?
Juan Zarate, a CBS News security analyst, says this recent plot is similar to one from 2010 in which several European sites were targeted.
Right before the World Trade Center was destroyed, the US government warned that a European attack appeared imminent.
“People were worried about Mumbai-style attacks coming from the al-Qaeda core,” Zarate said, adding, “It never materialized but officials were worried that they actually had operatives in place. And, that’s a great concern here.”
Obama says he has wiped out the Al Qaeda core with drone strikes.

Year to date temperatures in Minnesota have been the twentieth coldest on record. The last year this cold was 1996.
Normally the past two weeks produce the rapidest melt of the year. This year there has been almost no loss of ice area since July 24.
This year “will without a doubt” rank in the top five lowest levels of ice extent ever recorded in the satellite era, and there is a good possibility that 2013 could rank second in terms of recorded ice lows, said Walt Meier, a scientist at the National Snow & Ice Data Center.
“It’s kind of remarkable that it’s as low as it is [this year], given that the weather conditions were not terribly optimal for ice loss,” Meier said.

Earth to Walt. Arctic ice extent is the highest in the last nine years. What is remarkable is how the thin rotten decayed ice made such a spectacular rebound this summer.
