US March temperatures continue to plummet, and are now the coldest since 1969 and ninth coldest on record.

On March 15, 2013, Arctic sea ice extent appears to have reached its annual maximum extent, marking the beginning of the sea ice melt season.

Sea level rise underestimated, say B.C. scientists

The gathering of the American Association for the Advancement of Science heard Sunday the sea level could rise by as little as 30 centimetres or as much as one metre in the next century.

But SFU geology professor John Clague, who studies the effect of the rising sea on the B.C. coast, says a rise of about one metre is more likely.

He said that’s serious enough to threaten the communities of Richmond and Delta, including homes, Vancouver’s international airport, Deltaport and theTsawwassen ferry terminal.

“We’re going to see people either defending property, spending tremendous amounts of money trying to defend coastal properties, or we need to relocate the peripheries of our cities to higher elevations,” said Clague.

There has been little or no sea level rise in Vancouver over the last century.

The record snowfall that fell in Greater Lafayette on Sunday night and early Monday was similar to the half a foot that fell 100 years ago today at the height of the worst flood in Tippecanoe County history.

Despite the snow of March 26, 1913, the river began receding late that night after reaching a record level of 32.9 feet. While the snow didn’t worsen the flood, it came at a most inopportune time.

The Lafayette Morning Journal on March 27, 1913, told of some of the conditions residents faced.

• “The flood has carried away all the buildings on the levee. … Houses along the river road are flooded to the second story, and much property loss is reported.”

• “Many of the people are without coal oil and others are running short.”
