With the U.S. in a record drought and the hottest years on record in the last several years, changes are happening so dramatically and so quickly that even predictions made just years ago are happening decades ahead of scheduled times, alarming climate scientists. The Pentagon is also concerned and its recent study cites climate change as a “national security threat.”

The US is most certainly not in a record drought. Droughts of equal or worse severity were quite common during the first half of the last century.

Since the start of satellite records 20 years ago, sea level in British Columbia has been falling. Scientists are trying to determine how much of this drop in sea level is due to rapidly melting glaciers in Greenland, and how much is due to rapidly melting glaciers in Antarctica.

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.

Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.

Asked in a magazine interview whether he had ever fired a gun, Mr Obama said he did so with guests at the president’s rural retreat.

“Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,” he said. “And I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations.

“And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake”.
