One of the big lies of 2012 is that March and July were the hottest ever in the US. According to GHCN HCN daily temperatures, those records were actually set more than 100 years ago, in 1910 and 1901.

The decade with the most record monthly maximum temperatures, was the 1930s. Ten months set their all time record below 350 ppm CO2.

My husband and I have been hiking glaciers for almost 30 years in Canada, Alaska, and Patagonia, particularly along the Columbia Ice fields in Canada and Alaska, in Glacier National Park in the US , and the National Glacier Park in Chile. We have witnessed first-hand the melting away of these magnificent glaciers, particularly in the past dozen years. We are returning in December to Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina and we are curious to see if we will experience the same shocking disappearance of these magnificent water sheds frozen over thousands of years.

Explorer Captain George Vancouver found Icy Strait choked with ice in 1794, and Glacier Bay was barely an indented glacier. That glacier was more than 4000 ft. thick, up to 20 miles or more wide, and extended more than 100 miles to the St.Elias Range of mountains.

By 1879 naturist John Muir found that the ice had retreated 48 miles up the bay. By 1916 the Grand Pacific Glacier headed Tarr inlet 65 miles from Glacier Bay’s mouth.

The glaciers of Norway and Alaska lost half their mass during the first half of the 20th century. It has nothing to do with CO2.

Glaciers are retreating, because we are in an inter-glacial period. When the next ice age comes, glaciers will expand – and the human race will have real climate problems to worry about.

NOAA has done a bang up job cooling past temperature records, but it also turns out that they have been reducing or entirely missing many other historic weather events. Their deadliest tornado list has either under-counted or entirely missed many tornadoes from the past.

Ivan found this list of tornadoes which shows that they completely missed a tornado which killed 800 people in February 1884. That would have been #1 on the NOAA list. They also seem to have undercounted deaths from many others.

The following is a list of the worst tornadoes that have visited North America since 1880:

• April 18,1880—65 killed and 200 wounded.
• February 19, 1884—800 killed, 2500 wounded, and over 10,000 rendered homeless.
• April, 1892—40 killed in Kansas.
• June 14, 1892—50 killed in Minnesota.
• June 20, 1893—16 killed in Kansas river valley.
• September 20, 1894—75 killed in Iowa and Minnesota.
• May 27, 1896—500 killed in St. Louis and East St. Louis.
• March 30, 1897—Three-fourths of the town of Chandler, Okla. , destroyed.

But it is worse than it seems. I found another article showing even more huge tornadoes which they missed, like an 1842 tornado which killed 500 people.

During the late 1990s I was living in California and managing a large multi-national project for a French company. France (unlike the US and UK) is one of the few western countries where an engineering education is highly valued, and they turn out a lot of good engineers.

Unfortunately, France has very regressive labour laws (35 hrs/week max) which stifle innovation and makes them unattractive to start ups. So many of the best French engineers wanted to get green cards and move to California, where they could  actually make money.

Now France is piling on with a 90% top tax rate, which will drive off any hope of innovation, and will also likely drive Ibrahimovic out of PSG. Similarly, California has implemented repressive taxes like AB-32 which are driving start ups to Texas.

Government leaders like Barack Obama and Jerry Brown understand nothing about business, and simply see short term opportunities to steal money from anywhere they can.

For the good of the planet, of course.

During that time I was flying to the UK several times a month, and was astounded by the warm winters they were having. I had little doubt that global warming was real, and that snow was a thing of the past. At least until Robbie Burns night in 2003, when I got stuck on the train between London and Cambridge due to heavy snow.

During the past few days snow has fallen in the eastern parts of the United Kingdom. It is not an uncommon phenomenon in the winter, but it brought parts of the country to an uncomfortable standstill. Conditions on the M 11, one of the major motorways, which runs from London to Cambridge, were chaotic. Motorists spent up to 15 hours unable to move, and with virtually no help from the emergency services.
