We have 600 million years of information about the climate at CO2 levels up to 6,000 ppm. For example, there was an ice age during the Ordovician with CO2 levels 20X higher than they are today. Huge coral reefs formed during the late Permian with CO2 levels 10X higher than today. There is no indication in the historical record that higher CO2 levels kill coral reefs or are associated with monster hurricanes.

Many climate scientists aren’t interested in empirical data, choosing instead to use climate models which can be tuned to generate the results they want to see.

Bayonne’s windmill should be spinning by the end of the week, a city official said yesterday.

One of the transformers at the East Fifth Street pumping station sustained water damage after Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, and the station’s wind turbine has been down for the count ever since.

The transformer should be replaced today and will be powered up before the end of the week, Municipal Utilities Authority Executive Director Stephen Gallo said yesterday.

The $5.6 million windmill, paid for in large part by grants, helps power the station that pumps city sewage through Jersey City and on to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission treatment facility in Newark.

Bayonne previously spent $200,000 to power the station. Depending on wind velocity, the turbine, which became operational in June, will shave upwards of two-thirds of that cost, Gallo said.

The windmill cost $5,600,000 and worked for four months before a tropical storm wrecked it. They anticipate that when functional it will save $150,000 per year. That means it will only take 37 years to pay for itself.

On the other hand, had they put that $5.6 million in the bank at 5% interest, it would be worth $34 million in 37 years – which would pay for 170 years of electricity. Not to mention the fact that the windmill won’t last anywhere near 37 years, it will kill thousands of birds, and that a major hurricane (the new normal) would completely destroy their investment.

WHEN Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the US on October 29, it not only flooded the New York City subway and became the most important factor for 15 per cent of US voters in the presidential election a week later.

It also resurrected the unwarranted claim that global warming was to blame for such events, together with the morally irresponsible argument that we should help future hurricane victims by cutting CO2 emissions.

Sandy underscored a fundamental question for all parts of the world that are affected by hurricanes. If we want to reduce hurricane damage, should we focus primarily on a very cheap solution that would enable us to handle storm surges much better within a few years? Or should we pursue an incredibly expensive solution that would require almost 100 years to avoid 9mm of 7.5m surges?

The morally defensible answer is clear, and it has nothing to do with immediate reductions in CO2 emissions.

The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

The current version of the US temperature record from NOAA and NASA is a complete fraud, and fundamentally misrepresents changes to the US climate.
