The government is establishing 17 new “solar energy zones” on 285,000 acres in six states: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. More than half of the land — 153,627 acres — is in Southern California.

Interior also established 19 million acres — nearly 30,000 square miles — of so-called “variance zones” that will allow developers to propose solar projects in those areas. Environmental and other review of projects proposed in variance zones would be handled on a case-by-case basis.

The Obama administration has authorized 10,000 megawatts of solar, wind and geothermal projects that, when built, would provide enough energy to power more than 3.5 million homes, Salazar said.

10,000 megawatts on 19 million acres? That works out to 500 watts (peak) unreliable energy per acre of environmental destruction, millions of birds chopped up, habitat destroyed, power lines everywhere, and a massive legacy of stupidity and environmental destruction from the moron in chief.

You can get that much energy from a few tiny fossil fuel powered plants.

This drought may never break

IT MAY be time to stop describing south-eastern Australia as gripped by drought and instead accept the extreme dry as permanent, one of the nation’s most senior weather experts warned yesterday.

“Perhaps we should call it our new climate,” said the Bureau of Meteorology’s head of climate analysis, David Jones.

We fully expect that whatever the weather is, charlatans posing as climate scientists will tell us they they predicted it all along.

Dr. Julienne Stroeve told the environmental group Greenpeace in a press release,  “The loss of summer sea ice has led to unusual warming of the Arctic atmosphere, that in turn impacts weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere, that can result in persistent extreme weather such as droughts, heat waves and flooding.”

Many, but not all, scientists agree that greenhouse gas emissions are the cause of climate change. However, virtually all climate and weather experts predict that the shrinking of the Arctic ice may have a profound effect that could be felt around the world.  Major questions troubling scientists and ordinary people alike are: how quickly will these effects take place and what measures are appropriate to compensate.

One of the top concerns is the melting of the Greenland ice cap.

At one point this summer, surface melt was occurring across 97 percent of the Greenland ice cap. The decline of Arctic sea ice does not contribute directly to an increase in sea level. However, because it sits on land, the melting of the Greenland ice cap has the potential to raise sea level by many feet, possibly inundating low lying areas such as New Orleans, parts of Florida and numerous other locations around the globe.

In January, the three stooges (Gore Hansen and Trenberth) traveled to Antarctica to highlight melting ice. This produced Goreffect³ which led to record ice and cold.

The Antarctic voyage is part of a larger campaign to focus attention on the threat climate change poses to the world’s ice sheets and glaciers — a subject Gore highlighted in his 2007 documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and at a 2009 conference he convened with Norway’s foreign minister, Jonas Gahr Støre.

“This winter we will be talking about Antarctica as part of our ‘Living on Thin Ice’ campaign which will focus on how people around the globe are being impacted by the melting of the world’s ice,” Climate Reality Project spokesman Eric Young said. “As part of that effort, we are journeying to Antarctica with our chairman, Vice President Gore, and leading scientists and thinkers to see firsthand how the climate crisis is unfolding.”

Antarctica is not the only stop for Gore’s campaign, Young said, which has convened events in Ecuador, the Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn and is planning trips to Nepal and the Alps.
