John Cook loves to quote the statistic that “there are more record highs than record lows” in recent years.

Well surprise, surprise surprise. Study after study has shown that urbanization keeps nighttime temperatures up. This has been understood for hundreds of years. Even in the tiny town of Barrow, Alaska – UHI keeps winter temperatures 2.2C above the surrounding regions.

During winter (December 2001–March 2002), the urban area averaged 2.2 °C warmer than the hinterland. The strength of the UHI increased as the wind velocity decreased, reaching an average value of 3.2 °C under calm (<2 m s?1) conditions and maximum single-day magnitude of6 °C

The average minimum May temperature at the urban locations displayed an apparent upward increase through the time series (1910 through 2000), which was attributed to the urban growth of the region. By the end of the series, there was a +4 to 7 ºC (7 to 13 ºF) difference between the urban minimum temperatures and the rural minimum temperatures

Of course there are fewer record lows, and the reasons are well understood. No need for alarmists to lie about it.

It’s easy to confuse current weather events with long-term climate trends, and hard to understand the difference between weather and climate.

Trenberth lives in Boulder, yet seems to know little about the weather in Colorado. In his Judy Woodruff interview, he said that “we don’t expect to see wildfires this early in the season”

That is just freaking dense. The worst southwestern fires normally happen in June, because they come during drought years before the monsoons start in July. The largest fire in recent Colorado history was the Hayman fire, which started on June 8, 2002. The fires which burned up the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico in 1977, 2000, and 2010 happened in May and June. Like Colorado, Arizona’s largest fire occurred in June 2002.

Once July hits, a strong flow of moisture comes into the southwest. Trenberth, as climate chief at NCAR, should probably try to learn a little bit about the climate.

Climate is the long term pattern of weather, and you can’t see long term patterns over a period of one week.

Consider Hillsboro, Ohio – the closest USHCN station to Cincinnati. Last week they had three days over 100F, the longest such hot spell since 1949. It would be easy to conclude that Hillsboro is experiencing climate change – unless you looked at the long term record.

The 1890s was by far the hottest decade in Hillsboro, with thirty-two 100 degree days. From 1900 to 1964, there were also thirty-two 100 degree days. But in the last 48 years, there have only been five. Hot days have been in sharp decline around Cincinnati for more than a century.

Not only are heatwaves becoming less intense and less frequent in Missouri, but they are also starting later. Lebanon, Missouri has had seventy-five May/June days over 100 degrees since 1885. All but four of those days came with CO2 below 350 ppm CO2.

May 31, 1934 reached 101 degrees in Lebanon – almost a month earlier than the first 100 degree day in 2012.

People who are attempting to link CO2 and heatwaves in the US, are either incompetent or dishonest.

The Greenland ice sheet receives about a metre of snow every year, and most of it never sees any melting. With summer in full swing at -14C, they are digging their way out before next winter hits in about eight weeks.

In 1988, some US planes from WWII were found buried under 260 feet of ice, which had accumulated over 46 years.

Six American fighter planes and two bombers that crash-landed in Greenland in World War II have been found 46 years later buried under 260 feet of ice, searchers said today.

A group from Atlanta said it found what became known as the ”lost squad-ron” last month and plans to tunnel into the ice and lside the eight air-planes to the surface.

Richard Taylor, one of the leaders of the successful expedition, said today that he and another leader, Pat Epps, were ”going to fly two of them off the ice.”

The other planes will be dismantled and returned to the United States for restoration, he said. Some will be sold to pay for the expedition.

”We have a meeting tomorrow with a contractor from Seattle who is accustomed to doing Arctic work,” Mr. Taylor said.

The saga of the flights began July 15, 1942, as the two B-17 bombers escorted six P-38 fighters from greenland to Reykjavik, Iceland. They ran into bad weather. A German submarine jammed their communications with Reykjavik, and the planes low on fuel and unable to find their destination, returned to Greenland, where they belly-landed on the ice about 10 miles inland.

Alarmists go into mindless Tharn staring at glacial ice calving at the margins of Greenland, without realizing that it started as glacial ice accumulating in the interior. They just aren’t very intelligent people.

Heatwaves were much worse in the past in the US. It is important that climate experts honor history, rather than deny it.

Lebanon, Missouri is ground zero for the 2012 heatwave. They have seen five days over 100F this year. By contrast, during 1936 they had forty-one days over 100F. During the past decade, they have had 31 days over 100F, compared to 152 days during the 1930s. Extremely hot days were five times more common during the 1930s.

The 1950s had 58 days over 100 degrees, including the all-time record high of 113 degrees. Bottom line is that the US saw much more severe heatwaves in the past when CO2 was below 320 ppm. Not only was the duration of the heatwaves longer, but the intensity was greater. The climate was hotter in the past.

Blaming CO2 for heatwaves defies history and science, and is nothing more than superstition. The 1990s had unusually cool summers after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, and that gap has blinded people to the longer term record.
