Bill McGuire, Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College, London has just outdone all the fraudsters before him (by a considerable margin) in today’s UK Telegraph. There is a tremendous amount of material to work with, but I am just going to concentrate on one piece at a time.

He described Alaska, where average winter temperatures have already risen by three degrees centigrade in the last half century,as “the canary in the cage”. Earthquakes and seismic shocks have increased there over recent decades as ice sheets have thinned,and landslides have become more frequent as permafrost biding rock to mountainsides has thawed. There has also been a similar increase in landslides in the Alps, the Caucuses and in New Zealand.

That $825,000 is almost as much as the University of Colorado received to study the effects of global warming on Prairie Dogs, in a place which hasn’t recorded any warming for 70 years.

But damn, it’s a hard fight, up against a ton of money and a ton of inertia. Eventually, climate denial will “lose”, because physics and chemistry are not intimidated even by Lord Monckton. But timing is everything – if he and his ilk, a crew of certified planet wreckers, delay action past the point where it can do much good, they’ll be able to claim one of the epic victories in political history – one that will last for geological epochs.

Had they used the 1930-1950 average as their normal period, their graph would have been no use to Joe Romm.

North and South Polar ice extent are both right at 12 million km² and both right at “normal”
