U.S. Coal Generation Drops 19 Percent In One Year, Leaving Coal With 36 Percent Share Of Electricity
By Stephen Lacey on May 14, 2012 at 9:27 am
Power generation from coal is falling quickly. According to new figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, coal made up 36 percent of U.S. electricity in the first quarter of 2012 — down from 44.6 percent in the first quarter of 2011.
That stunning drop, which represented almost a 20 percent decline in coal generation over the last year, was primarily due to low natural gas (methane) prices. As EIA explains, natural gas generation will climb steadily this year, while coal will see a double-digit drop by the end of 2012:The continued decline in domestic coal generation is good news for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon dioxide emissions from the fossil fuel sector are expected to decline by almost 3 percent this year — continuing the 1.9 percent decrease seen in 2011.
Last time I checked, methane was a hydrocarbon, and burning it released the only two greenhouse gases of any significance – H2O and CO2.
However, the exploration for and mining of methane often causes its inadvertent release into the atmosphere. Greenies are normally terrified of methane and believe it frequently leads to mass extinctions. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
NSIDC normally stretches the Y-scale of their Arctic plots relative to their Antarctic plots, which makes it look like the negative anomaly is very large. Below I put both together at the same scale.
It turns out that the polar ice caps are doing just fine, and the Arctic Penguins and Wildebeest are in no immediate danger of drowning.
The President and his supporters have determined that oil and coal are evil, and need to be shut down. Energy industries should oblige them with a voluntary shutdown three weeks ahead of the July 4th holiday. People don’t know what they have got – till it’s gone.

Ignorance of history seems to be a common thread of all radical movements. This writer apparently believes that Africa didn’t used to have droughts, and that Asia didn’t used to have floods.
Bracing for tough climate talks
With the climate situation seemingly deteriorating, the talks resuming in Bonn today after the Durban meeting last December will be closely monitored by the world public. The world’s future may depend on it.
THE global climate change negotiations resume in Bonn today, for the first time since the turbulent annual conference of the parties in Durban last December.
The Bonn talks will be closely watched by the world public, since the climate situation seems to be deteriorating.
There have been heavy rainfall causing serious floods, for example, in Pakistan and Thailand, frequent damaging storms in the Philippines and Central and South America, and drought in parts of Africa.
A review of history tells us that we have always had an abundance of bad weather and stupid people on this planet.
Texas has had 4-8 inches of permanent drought during the past week, and is expecting more today.
This headline made me laugh :
Obama has no business experience, and since he and the Democrats took over Washington in 2006, unemployment and the national debt has doubled.
Hope and change.
Democrats win House, promise new direction
POSTED: 6:05 p.m. EST, November 8, 2006(CNN) — Democrats promised Wednesday to lead the country in a new direction after winning control of the House for the first time in 12 years in midterm elections.
By early Wednesday, Democrats had picked up at least 29 seats; they needed 15 to capture a majority in the House. Two Democratic seats in Georgia that were targeted by Republicans remained too close to call.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, is now poised to become the first female speaker of the House.
Pelosi promised to lead the nation in a new direction “in partnership, not in partisanship.”
David Appell reports :
Taking water from the ground sends it on its way to the oceans, but putting up dams in rivers keeps it from reaching the sea. Humans are doing more of the former, and the dams are about at capacity.
Dams are at capacity? The team needs to decide if we are in a permanent drought or a permanent flood, because talking out of both sides of their mouth makes them look like idiots.
