Back in early March, the Summit Daily ran an online poll asking readers what they thought about climate change. The available answers were (1) Climate change is occurring but not due to human activity; (2) It is a complete hoax; and (3) It is a serious thing and something we can and should do something about. A forth option was “I’m not sure.” Even though online polls are notoriously inaccurate, I found the results quite interesting.
The “Not Sure” response, which I thought would bring in a lot more votes if people really voiced their true opinions, turned out to poll at only 3.5 percent. The other three choices, amazingly, polled at about a third of the votes for each. A small majority thinks climate change is real, but not due to us. Next came the “It’s a hoax” crowd; leaving true believers in a close third place. There are few “undecideds” in this discussion.

Last summer, Joe Romm declared the official beginning of the permanent southwest drought. I just spoke with my mother in New Mexico, who told me that it “has been raining so much – it looks like the Garden of Eden”
That didn’t work out too well for him, so Joe has backtracked. Now he is promising a permanent drought sometime in the future, based on a careful study of his own writing.

The response by NOAA’s Martin Hoerling to James Hansen’s recent op-ed does not reflect the scientific literature.
I’m traveling, so let me focus first on Hoerling’s incorrect statements — posted on this blog and DotEarth — about drought. As readers know, the journal Nature asked me to write a Comment piece on the threat posed by drought after they read one of my posts examining the latest science on prolonged drought and “Dust-Bowlification.
The only permanent drought is the lack of hair on his head, and lack of clarity between his ears. The PMDI shows no trend in US southwest drought. The worst droughts were in the first decade of the previous century.

The American polar expert Robert Correll, among the key contributors to the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report issued in February, described the acceleration as “massive”.
Estimates of the likely rise in sea levels this century vary, and the IPCC published a conservative range of between 20cm-60cm. But those estimates are now heavily disputed, with many scientists insisting that new data collected since the IPCC report suggested a rise closer to two metres. Professor Correll said there was now a “consensus” that a significant acceleration in the loss of ice mass has occurred since the last report.
Meanwhile, reality says the consensus are morons.

Published: November 13, 2010TASIILAQ, Greenland — With a tense pilot gripping the stick, the helicopter hovered above the water, a red speck of machinery lost in a wilderness of rock and ice.
Hanging out the sides of the craft, two scientists sent a measuring device plunging into the water, between ice floes. Near the bottom, it reported a temperature of 40 degrees. It was the latest in a string of troubling measurements showing that the water was warm enough to melt glaciers rapidly from below.
“That’s the highest we’ve seen this far up the fjord,” said one of the scientists, Fiammetta Straneo.
The temperature reading was a new scrap of information in the effort to answer one of the most urgent — and most widely debated — questions facing humanity: How fast is the world’s ice going to melt?
As a result of recent calculations that take the changes into account, many scientists now say that sea level is likely to rise perhaps three feet by 2100 — an increase that, should it come to pass, would pose a threat to coastal regions the world over.
And the calculations suggest that the rise could conceivably exceed six feet, which would put thousands of square miles of the American coastline under water and would probably displace tens of millions of people in Asia.
