Obama – The Anti-Midas Touch

Is there anything which Obama has touched which hasn’t turned into a complete disaster?

BAGHDAD – More than 80 people were killed and dozens more were wounded Monday in a string of violent attacks around Iraq, the deadliest day in the country so far this year, police and government officials said.

In the worst incident, two bombs exploded in a busy market in the city center of Kut, killing at least 42 and injuring more than 50.

When They Forecast The Demise Of Snow And Cold, What They Meant Was Record Snow And Cold

“Heavy snowstorms are not inconsistent with a warming planet,” said Dr. Jeff Masters, director of meteorology and co-founder of the Weather Underground website. “In fact, as the Earth gets warmer and more moisture gets absorbed into the atmosphere, we are steadily loading the dice in favor of more extreme storms in all seasons, capable of causing greater impacts on society.”

As the Earth gets warmer, we have more record cold weather. Trapped heat causes an excess of cold, which in turn produces lots of snow. Cold is the new hot.

Snow Is A Thing Of The Past

Two weeks of warm weather hasn’t done much to defrost trails at Mount Rainier National Park, but there are still places to get in a hike or check out wildflowers.

Paradise on the south side of the mountain is setting records for August snow depth. On Aug. 7, it recorded 44 inches of snow, surpassing the record of 40 inches set in 1974. The snow depth has been above record levels ever since.

“If you’re going to have snow, you might as well set records,” said ranger Davis Root. “People are still surprised how much snow we have at Paradise.”

As of Aug. 9, Paradise reported 907 inches of snow for 2011, one of its top five snow years, according to the blog maintained by the park’s climbing rangers. The snowline is just below Paradise at about 5,000 feet, Root said, but there are still hazards on many trails.

Snow Is A Thing Of The Past

This was caused by a missing chunk of ice in Hudson Bay. It had nothing to do with low solar activity.

Why The Eastern Arctic Is A Don’t Care

The reason why NSIDC showed “record low” extent in July was due mainly to low extent in the eastern Arctic, near Siberia. This area is pretty much of a don’t care, because there was no MYI there in the spring. MYI has largely survived the summer again, indicating that the ice continues to recover from 2007.

Al Gore Was Right!

No wonder global warming has Al Gore so hot under the collar.

His impassioned speech against climate change deniers induced a frenzy of conservative chest-pounding last week wherein Fox News and the usual suspects swore his scatological sermon must be a symptom of dementia. They went on to repeat the same misleading memes the ex-vice president decried in Aspen.

Science, however, is on Gore’s side.

Last month was the fourth-warmest July on record in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which note  that the nation remains in severe drought.

A few days ago they were complaining about floods and excess moisture in the US. Now they say the country is under a a severe drought.

Why 2011 Is Not Likely To Be Close to 2007

If the ice edge doesn’t change in the next six days, this is how the comparison vs. 2007 will look. Green is ice present in 2011 which was not present in 2007. Red is the opposite.

It would require a dramatic change in weather for 2011 to end up close to 2007.
