The White House is pushing back against the growing narrative that Obama is “sitting on the sidelines,” as reported by the New York Times yesterday, and letting Congress do all the work.

As John Boehner spent the night trying to wrestle members into place to support his debt ceiling deal, Valerie Jarret reminded reporters yesterday that it was President Obama who was losing sleep over the issue.

“He’s getting absolutely no sleep. He’s working tirelessly, meeting with his economic team, doing a lot of outreach, exploring all kinds of possibilities for compromise,” Jarrett said.

Chief of Staff William Daley told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last night that Obama has issued a secret plan for solving the debt crisis.

Met Office celebrates 150 years of forecasting for the Nation

Monday 1st of August 2011 is a very special day for the Met Office.  We will be celebrating 150 years of forecasting for the nation, marking the anniversary of the first ever public weather forecast appearing in print.

To mark the event, the Met Office is launching a photo competition asking the public to put forward pictures which define weather moments of 2011 so far.  Details of the competition, as well as a timeline of major events in forecasting over the last 15 decades, are on the Met Office website or you can find out more about our history as well.

Energy received from the Sun either accumulates in the oceans or goes back out into space. If the oceans aren’t warming, that means that the amount of heat going back into space is equal to the amount being received from the Sun.

Global warming proponents talk mindlessly about the atmosphere “trapping heat” – but this concept is ridiculous. The heat capacity of the atmosphere is very small, as indicated by the fact that it can cool 50 degrees over the desert, just a few hours after the sun sets. If the oceans aren’t warming, global warming isn’t happening – period.

Global Warming Doomsters’ Theories Wrong, Says NASA Study

Global warming proponents can catch up on the sleep they lost worrying about the planet getting hotter with each passing day. A NASA study which analyzes satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011, published in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing, reports that Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than global warming proponents’ computer models have predicted.

The data also supports prior studies which suggested that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap is far lesser heat than what have been claimed by the global warming doomsters.

The discrepancy between the model-based forecasts of rapid global warming and meteorological data showing a slower rate of warming has given rise to heated debates for more than two decades.

“The satellite observations suggest there is much more energy lost to space during and after warming than the climate models show,” Dr. Roy Spencer, study co-author and principal research scientist in the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, said in a press release. “There is a huge discrepancy between the data and the forecasts that is especially big over the oceans.”

Greenland’s surface area is more than 2 trillion square metres. The average annual snowfall is one metre. That means that two trillion cubic metres of snow falls every year, which compacts to about one trillion cubic metres of ice. In order to remain in equilibrium, one trillion cubic metres of ice has to move into the sea.

If this didn’t happen, the ice sheet would rise past the top of the troposphere in 20,000 years. So next time some climate moron starts throwing around numbers about billions of tons of ice being lost, remind them that they need to go back to primary school and start over with their maths, science and basic thinking skills.
