1911 : Niagara Falls Froze

1911 was one of the hottest years in history. It also had record cold.

Margaret writes:
Her mother had a cousin living in Niagara Falls that year.  She told the family that she and her neighbors woke up in the night feeling something was wrong. It took a while but they finally realized that it was the lack of noise.  They had all become so used to the roar of the Falls that the silence was unusual enough to alert their senses.  Of course at that time nearly all the houses were near the Falls.  Amazing pictures!  Almost 100 years old.  Can you imagine walking on Niagara Falls?

Million dollar drop as wine tumbles

IT was certainly an expensive drop – more than $1 million worth of shiraz wine has gone down the drain after it was dropped by a malfunctioning forklift.

The 462 cases of 2010 Mollydooker Velvet Glove shiraz – at $185 a bottle – fell more than 6m to the ground as it was being loaded for export from Adelaide to the US.

The drop was so forceful, the bottles punched through the top of the cartons. Winemaker Sparky Marquis said the accident had cost him a third of his annual production.

Record Cold In Bolivia

Cold Spell Damages Crops, Causes Deaths
Posted: Nate on Jul 21 | Environment, Health

An influx of cold polar air in the last week has produced record low temperatures throughout Bolivia and severely damaged crops in least five departments of the country.  The freeze hurt almost all edible crops grown in the areas affected and has already resulted in increased prices for those items in large cities.  According to reports, the ice and snow of last week most affected Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Tarija, Potosí, and La Paz.  In all of these areas the cold compounded with hurricane-force winds lasted three days.  Several cities also registered record low temperatures.

According to one farmer from the Chaco region, Flavio Cuéllar, “The snow froze all of the plants.  Those that survived will only be good for saving for seeds.”  Despite the harsh conditions produced by the temperatures and snowfall, farmers are still concerned about the deep freezes that will further harm plants when the snow melts and refreezes.  Farmers are also concerned about their livestock since the cold has damaged grazing land and alfalfa growth.  Authorities haven´t been able to put together accurate reports of the extent of the damage considering the scope of the situation and the remote areas affected.

In the five countries impacted by the Antarctic air at least 83 people have reportedly died from hypothermia.  Bolivian casualties account for 21 of those fatalities: nine in El Alto, six in Santa Cruz, and two in each of the departments Oruro, Cochabamba, and Beni.  The cold has also prompted education officials to suggest extending winter vacation until July 26 because of the risk of spreading seasonal diseases in schools.

Dems Shooting For 30% Unemployment

They want to guarantee that private sector unemployment collapses into a full-scale depression – by shipping  jobs overseas.

Barbara Mikulski, Democratic senator from Maryland, best captured the turn of events in the critical US debt talks.
After emerging from a lunch meeting on Thursday with members of her party and Jack Lew, the White House budget director, Ms Mikulski said her colleagues were feeling “volcanic” about the prospect of a $3,000bn deal to cut deficits and raise the debt ceiling that did not include any higher taxes, adding that it was “like Mount Vesuvius” in the roo.

Harry Reid, the US Senate majority leader, added: “This can’t be all cuts, there has to be a balance.”

Obama Angry About The Debt

After Obama and the Democratic Congress increased the debt by 50% in just three years, Obama is angry that Republicans haven’t fixed it – during six months of Obama blocking them from doing anything which could help.

This is what happens when you elect an angry, socialist, know-nothing, do-nothing, no-nothing to the presidency.

PIPS Ice Loss In July

The videos below show all thicknesses and 2+ metre thickness ice. Note that ice loss has stalled over the last few days.

If I were going to make a September forecast, I would base it on the image below, which is the edge of 2 metre thick ice. It is likely that all thinner ice will melt out before mid-September.

The Big Weather Story This Summer

Central Siberia has been receiving blasts of cold this summer, which has inhibited melting of ice in the East Siberian Sea. This has caused a slowdown of ice loss over the last 10 days.
