USHCN deleted their monthly data last week, and apparently are making a transition from version 2.0 to 2.5. My guess about this surprise move is that they are going to make past “raw” data colder, and current “raw” data warmer. This will make their massive adjustments appear smaller.
It will be easy enough to test this, as I have local copies of their old raw data, and will be able to do a direct comparison.
Chuckle (and mental rubbing of hands, greedily).
I think they will hide manipulation of the raw data using the section “Database construction and quality control” as mentioned here http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/ushcn/ .
It will be interesting to see the monthly summaries of raw data in 2.5 v 2.0.
They are also changing the station ID to use the GHCN format. That will be nice although it will make station to station comparison between the 2 data sets a little more cumbersome.
I have noticed with time that it is getting harder to get old temperature data on line. It is probably no accident.
