Global Warming Science Boat May Be Trapped For Years In Non-Existent Ice

glaciologists aboard the Shokalskiy think the ship might have become inadvertently caught in the formation of a new area of fast ice, which could stay in place for several years.

Antarctic sea ice area is the highest on record for the date, up 20% since the 1970’s.

  1. oeman50 says:

But I thought all of that ice was being melted by the heat hiding in the deep oceans? And it’s the beginning of summer in the Antarctic with even more melting, right? How can they be trapped? I am so confused…….

  2. gator69 says:

“It became stuck in the ice near Cape de la Motte in East Antarctica, around 1,500 nautical miles from Hobart in Tasmania, after strong blizzards hit the vessel on Christmas Eve.”

Santa’s revenge for an unflattering video?

  3. Kepler says:

The Antarctic is screaming…with laughter at those explorer wannabes.

    • squid2112 says:

I’m screaming with laughter every time I seem mention of this story.

      …AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…

    • Teddi says:

This whole laughable affair creates the perfect visual image for the whole AGW movement. A bread crumb trail of icebreakers that can be followed right to the AGW research ship that was looking for evidence of global warming ice loss…

One picture is worth a thousand words.

  4. Don B says:

“It’s remarkable just how much change there’s been,” said Turney. “The ice that’s packed around us is many years old, some is more than 10 years old.”

“The multi-year sea ice surrounding the Shokalskiy is much thicker and stronger than the new, first-year sea ice because it has had years of snowfall on top and freezing underneath.”

  5. Sundance says:

Is it my imagination or is the Guardian becoming less tolerant of opposing views and censoring more comments? I must be on some secret enemies list of theirs as they didn’t publish my comment pointing out that it appears likely that environmentalists and anti-fossil fuel activists stuck in the ice will end up being saved by fossil fuels. I think the Guardian is sensitive to the fact that everyone has figured out that this unscientific Antarctic excursion was nothing more than another PR stunt like rowing to the Arctic and the Guardian activists masquerading as reporters have become a laughing stock.

    • Cheshirered says:

Well spotted. So many are on pre-moderation it’s almost a sceptic-free zone. A couple of weeks ago one of the True Believers posted that there wasn’t as many sceptical comments from the ‘deniers’ – and that scepticism was therefore dying.

I answered that everyone was either banned or moderated into oblivion. At least I tried to; my post wasn’t even allowed to see the light of day, let alone published then deleted.

They’re highly sensitive these days as they know almost every indicator is falling against their pet theory.

This latest Antarctic episode is HUGELY embarrassing for them, especially as they’re headline sponsors. Pardon me while I go and laugh myself stupid.

      • squid2112 says:

My posts get through, but that is because I have gone incognito and pass myself as an alarmist. I have made the most outlandish alarmist claims, and then watch the dipshits all circle jerk and agree and embellish even more. It’s fun as all get up .. what a laugh riot!

        • Yeah, I went there as a sock puppet alarmist, and criticized my own post to get them to read my blog. I have done the same thing on Skeptical Science, a site which immediately bans all skeptics, almost as bad as Real Climate. Worst of all, by far, is Wikipedia. What a bunch of frigging morons there.

    • Teddi says:

I tried replying at this CNN article and they censored every post pointing out the AGW aspects underlining this story.

  6. Steevo says:

Curious, it seems that the (smaller ice breaker) Snow dragon got within 6 nautical miles of the Shokalskiy, and the ( larger ice breaker) Australis now on the seen has only been able to achieve reaching a distance of 10 nautical miles from the Shokalskiy. Sounds like record ice expansion to me…. Pitty the folly of the global warmist expedition, the Shokalskiys frozen remains shall be encased in ice for the millennia.

  7. Dmh says:

*ONLY* 1.5 million km^2 today above the 1979-2008 average. 🙂

  8. Donna K. Becker says:

Here’s a maxim for those on board: Reality Rules.

  9. margaret berger says:

    and the cold bites.

  10. Ya gotta love the way Mother Nature loves to come up behind these idiots and gives them a good kick in the ass. The old broad is a pistol.

  11. Gamecock says:

“We’re stuck in our own excrement.” Wait . . . what?

    Oh, “own experiment.” Never mind.

  12. B.C. says:

Somewhere there’s a dead parrot pining away for the fjords…

  13. cdw100 says:

Is the Jerry Sandusky of climatology stuck on that boat?

  14. Andy Oz says:

Perhaps the Guardian PR stunt team will end up like the lost squadron of planes in Greenland, encased in ice. Or they can imagine themselves to be Walt Disney.

  15. The Iconoclast says:

i want to see them REALLY replicate Mawson’s voyage. Like hike to his camp and wait there and miss the boat and wait another year, eat their dogs, fall into a crevasse, you know, real suffering like the real explorers experienced, not these instagram moments with the guy interjecting “BRILLIANT” periodically.

  16. Bob Koss says:

I understand the Aussies generally refer to people rescued from the ocean as boat people. They usually take boat people to Christmas Island or Nauru for confinement until they are permitted to enter Australia.

Perhaps they might do the same with this group with an IQ test thrown in for good measure.

    • Andy Oz says:

These days we send them straight to New Zealand. This lot were trying to sail to Australia from New Zealand and took a wrong turn. 😀

  17. Fat Tony says:

Remember, it summer time down there right now, so it should be 24/7 of day light, and mild temps.

  18. OMMAG says:

Reality can be slap in the face for the habitually stupid. Reality is getting lazy ….

  19. Karl W. Braun says:

Dr. Chris Turkey’s preparations for this noble expedition highlighted in this piece from Australia’s ABC:
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-25/15-million-australian-expedition-to-antarctica/5116158

  20. GregO says:

So it’s a good thing after all that these serious men (and women) of science trekked to distant, hostile, Antarctica only to find, (actually confirm with actual observation) that yes, indeed, Antarctic ice is at a local maximum, and is growing. The courageous decision to stay in place to be enveloped by fast forming ice, a selfless act driven by burning scientific curiosity I’m sure, will only help to get the message out: Earth is cooling not warming! Just look at the southern hemisphere!

/just kidding. They’re fools and wankers stuck in their own delusions – and the ice.

    • Geoff Jones says:

and has been cooling for the last 16-17 years.. nature at it`s best.. too many alarmist dickheads in this world today , they must be making lots of money from it, oh, that is right , governments like ours give them millions …..

  21. Stan says:

Global warming isn’t dead, it’s just resting, and pining for the fjords…

  22. Hugh K says:

Three (possibly 4 if we count the French ship that surrendered immediately to the ice) ships and crews involved…break…well isn’t this nice….Kapersky just alerted me to a network attack…back to comment…a helicoptor….sat phones, provisions, fuel, etc, etc. Oh well, at least the ice for cocktails is free.
So who is paying for all of this? Big oil? Big government? I’ve tried to find out but it appears no journalist has thought to ask that question. Which begs the additional question; Why?
