  1. I suspect, Mr. Goddard, that if you were to turn your investigations into records of sea ice areas and extents, you would find evidence of similar tinkering with averages.

If true, it may well be that we are at above record levels for this time of the year, and that the drama of 2007 and 2012 are not quite as dramatic as the frenzy suggested.

  2. R. Shearer says:

Shouldn’t they hold out for a solar or wind powered ice breaker rescue?

  3. Mohatdebos says:

Isn’t it interesting that the alarmists would like us to be alarmed because the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet will drown the Statue of Liberty. Yet, at the same time, they are now claiming that their witches brew (sorry models) tells them that Antarctica will remain cold even if the rest of the world warms. I pray that these shamans and charlatans are exposed soon for what they are.

  4. Don says:

Many are getting ever more shrill. One guy on DTT dot com goes nuts whenever I post some failed predictions, saying that scientists always make wrong predictions. Mentions many claiming that man could never fly, etc. Last night he went nuts and accused me of being paid to post the anti-AGW stuff I post (he’s made accusations – shocking I know – against Steve when I link some stuff from Steve). The thing is, he claims he is neither the AGW camp nor the anti-AGW camp yet always posts apologies for the AGW crowd. Their heads are spinning.

  5. Don says:

Yes, intrepid Chinese turn back, await arrival of two other ships. Oh my! Ice too thick.

  6. GregM says:

Maybe they should call for this icebreaker, 75 000 hp going through ice at about two metres thick

  7. There’s melting going on alright . . . ; but, it an’t the ice that’s melting!, No, instead it’s the wicked witch of CAGW dogma . . . melting, melting, (all that beautiful wickedness spewed by the 97% consensus) melting into oblivion! And who would have thought the sunlight of truth could do all that damage.

  8. Justa Joe says:

I love this story. It’s like the garbage barge of left wing AGW hijinks.

  9. Chewer says:

Solar MAX in this cycle 24 really sucks for the warmsters:

  10. Don Allen says:

Memo to Max Krohn: Average can still kill you.

  11. The Iconoclast says:

According to Wikipedia the Aurora Australis can only break through ice 1.23 meters thick. (Really, 1.23 but not 1.24?) The Snow Dragon can break through ice a meter thick, and L’Astrolabe looks much smaller than the Australias (it’s shown on the WP page for the Australias).

So it’s quite possible that none of the ships will be able to rescue the Akademik Shokalskiy anytime soon.

Fudging numbers is easy. You can do it sitting at your desk. The passengers of the Akademik Shokalskiy are getting some genuine Climate Reality.

I probably shouldn’t think it’s funny, but I do. And the spin on how it’s proof of global warming (oh, it’s coming folks), that’ll be funny too. The next enviro-scam they’ll have learned their lesson. Make no testable predictions and claim everything that happens as proof of what they’re saying. They’ve mastered the latter, next time, the former.

  12. Don says:

Perhaps the crush of ice surrounding the intrepid scientists will begin to crush the hull of their ship. Ouch.

    • Andy Oz says:

I don’t know why they need rescuing at all. They should be able to tamper their way out of this problem. They’re smart people: they have PhD’s and everything! I’d leave them there until the ice melts and breaks up.

  13. The Iconoclast says:

NBC News is reporting that the French ship L’Astrolabe is no longer involved in the rescue.

Numerous articles report that the ice is more than ten feet thick. The Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis can break through ice four feet thick. Now I’m not a climate scientist but it seems like this could be a problem.

    Reggie!!!! Where’s that blowtorch?

  15. Stephen Richards says:

Steve, you are being really generous. 80 IQ ? How many crimatologists would it take to get a TOTAL of 80? let alone and average. An average would mean that several of them had an IQ over 80. Nah, not possible.

  16. That’s stupid, Steven Goddard. Everybody knows that averages exist independent of numbers. It’s just Science.

Let’s take a simple example: the average glass of water in the United States has probably has around 3ppb of lead. That means that all water is safe to drink, no matter how much lead some idiot says it has in it. Prosit!

  17. Andy Oz says:

Climate Change traps pseudo scientists in Antarctica and now is sending an unprecedented category 3 Cyclone towards north west Australia. The carbon tax was supposed to save us!!! Why is Gaia not harkening to our prayers when we are sending so much money to her high priests. Oh woe betide us!

  18. Kepler says:

Mawson had no ice-breaker or helicopter that could rescue him after crew member Ninnis was lost down a crevasse along with the best of the sledging dogs and supplies, and crew member Mertz was lost “…in a final bout of madness the poor man bit one of his fingers off and then fell asleep, never to wake up”. In “The Spirit of Mawson” the captain and crew of the MV Akademik Shokalskiy should reject all of these rescue attempts, and should instead survive totally on their wits as Mawson did.

  19. Tony B says:

Ice now 3-4m thick, but being such wonderful “scientists”, they don’t let an opportunity like this media focus sway them from their mission to highlight “climate change”. Enjoy reading the released statement.
