Can Hacking The Stratosphere Solve Climate Change?
Published: December 06, 2013

Environmental scientist David Keith proposes a cheap and shocking way to address climate change: What if we inject a huge cloud of sulfur into the atmosphere to deflect sunlight and heat?

About David Keith

Environmental scientist David Keith works at the intersection of climate science, energy, and public policy. His research has taken him into some the realms of geo-engineering — including a dramatic potential solution to climate change, such as blowing a cloud of sulfur into the sky to bring the average global temperature down.

His other areas of study include the capture and storage of CO2 , the economics and climatic impacts of large-scale wind power, and the use of hydrogen as a transportation fuel.

His forthcoming book is called A Case For Climate Engineering. He teaches policy and engineering at Harvard University, and was named Environmental Scientist of the Year by Canadian Geographic in 2006.

Wow.. that’s never been thought of before.. that guy so thinks outside the box.. all bow before him.

  2. Gamecock says:

    Billions will die.

  3. “Sulfur” sounds better for PR purposes than the reality that these geoengineering nuts are really talking about shooting 5 million tons of sulfuric acid per year into the atmosphere

    http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.com/2012/08/new-paper-proposes-pumping-sulfuric.html

but no mention this time about acid rain…

Since when have people become so F-ing stupid! Why in the world would anyone want me to make the earths climate colder if it was even remotely possible? Do they even realize that the human race always has and always will benefit from warmer climates? and that a colder climate would cause severe hardship for a variety of reasons ranging from less food because of shorter growing seasons, more use of natural resources to help keep warm, not to mention the hazards that more snow and ice would cause for just for traveling alone! The suffering would be incredible! Even my young son knows that people live better when the climate is milder. The people advocating asanine things like this are scientists? I always thought that scientists were supposed to have more than half a brain! So once again I ask, when did the scientific community become so stupid?

    • Phil Jones says:

I wonder if this guy ever leaves the office??

These tools are so focused on CO2 and Heat… That it seems they have never considered what a colder climate would be like… Good point…

    • Andy Oz says:

      All good questions Chris.
We must have been asleep or more likely we just couldn’t believe people could get so stupid.

    • When the environmentalists took over the science programs in schools. Geology is no longer offered at Vassar, where I went. They are calling it Environmental Studies or some crap, to attract more students. It’s a fad.

  5. TOM SERVO says:

He teaches engineering at Harvard . . . thanks for the laugh at least.

    • Andy Oz says:

“Climate” engineering! They had to have somewhere to put the rich morons who couldn’t pass any real studies. They have also successfully given science, engineering and tertiary degrees a bad name. Very sad.

    • R. de Haan says:

Thanks for the laugh… you should be crying your eyes out.
Hacks like are responsible for the new generation Green Nazi’s.
Universities today no longer employ teachers, only brainless ideologist’s.

  6. Randall_G says:

I suggest that Mr. Keith be injected into the upper atmosphere so that he can try to convince the climate to just get along with us. It won’t work, but it would be fun to watch.

  7. NikFromNYC says:

“Nobel winning scientist to boycott top science journals”
    http://phys.org/news/2013-12-nobel-scientist-boycott-science-journals.html

“…because the top tier journals are run by editors, rather than scientists, it’s often the flashiest articles that get published, rather than the best or most relevant.”

  8. Mike D says:

If Al Gore puts in the first 100 million for this, I’ll consider helping.

  9. tom0mason says:

Let’s spray sulfuric acid into the sky….what could possibly go wrong?

  10. gator69 says:

Stupidity that only a Harvard calibre man could muster.

  11. Tel says:

This is a really old idea, and given that the world is tending toward cooling right now, might not be quite the best time for it.

  12. philjourdan says:

Got to be a democrat. They are the only ones with ideas that stupid.

  13. R. de Haan says:

Well, we can send him into the desert with a sun screen…

  14. Rosco says:

As usual in climate science – not an original idea in sight and like the greenhouse effect hypothesis based on asinine unproven incorrect assumptions.

Flannery – the climate clown of Ox proposed this in 2008 claiming it needs to be done “urgently”

    http://www.news.com.au/national/climate-plan-could-change-sky-colour/story-e6frfkp9-1111116384553

He – like all the rest of the climate charlatans – incapable of any real original intelligent “science” in this fraud – probably also plagiarised someone else’s idea.

  15. Rosco says:

Wish the “X” and “Z” weren’t side by side on my keyboard.

  16. Olaf Koenders says:

So he basically wants to explode Pinatubo again. Nature’s doing it anyway all over the planet. He desperately needs to be recycled into a pink mist.
