Climate Experts Recycling Identical Scare Stories From 35 Years Ago

Republicans are melting the West Antarctic Ice Sheet irreversibly, so we need to destroy the economy in order to reverse it.

While our planet melts, GOP pleads ignorance

This is exactly the same story as 35 years ago, except Steven Schneider wasn’t certain it was the Republicans doing it.

Five years earlier, the same Steven Schneider was upset that Nixon wouldn’t listen to his dire warnings about global cooling.

Yes … ‘the stupid party’ is solely responsible for all ‘evil’ in the world.

    Barry Soetoro told me so.

  2. daveandrews723 says:

I just heard a good one, new to me at least, today from another AGW alarmist. “The jet streams are out of control” because of man-made climate change, he said. They throw out any possible calamity they can think of to sway public opinion. And, unfortunately, the public eats it up.

It is irreversible now.” is code language (figuratively: “a dog whistle”) for:

Did I get that about right?

    Steve you missed the dénouement…

Here is an idea. The two parties should work together as if they were composed of adults to find a way to save our planet. Instead, the GOP is buck passing with an eye on the midterms. Ninety-seven percent of experts say we don’t have time for these shenanigans, yet Boehner and company pretend there’s still some kind of “debate” going on. Ninety-seven percent.

Maybe the GOP isn’t good at science, but surely they understand basic math.
Leonard Pitts Jr. is a columnist for The Miami Herald, 1 Herald Plaza, Miami, FL 33132. Send email to [email protected].

    Coming Sunday
In his Connecting the Dots column, Editorial Page Editor Dick Hughes will discuss one way to combat global warming.

    Just another lefty puppet.

If you find that dodging the crap they throw is entertaining, you are welcome to it.

I find it a waste of my time.

  6. Andy DTthat says:

I guess these guys never bother to check the facts. Antarctic sea ice has been at record HIGH levels.

  7. Latitude says:

    40 years ago…half a lifetime…..and we’re still waiting

  8. Justa Joe says:

If it’s in fact irreversible as Leonard has stated then it’s too late to do anything about it so it’s a moot point.

  9. Justa Joe says:

If, anybody from the GOP went around saying how the GOP is superior to the Donks in math & Science which is true I’d presume in the aggregate. Leonard Pitts would be among the first ones to run out there screaming how the GOP was sexist and racist.

  10. kirkmyers says:

I wonder if Leonard Pitts realizes how stupid he makes himself look with his nonsensical column. Is he aware of the growing body of evidence undermining the global warming theory? Does he realize antarctic sea ice extent is now at record levels and climbing? Is he aware that there has been no “global warming” in 17 years and 10 months despite rising CO2 levels?

Pitts might have made himself look less silly if had least done some rudimentary research before penning his scare story. He should stick to writing about subjects that are less intellectually challenging.

    • Repeated for emphasis: “Pitts might have made himself look less silly if had least done some rudimentary research … ” Jeez, all the man had to do was attend the Vegas Climate Conference ( http://climateconference.heartland.org/ ). He would have had a positively good uplifting time while discovering just how detailed skeptic climate assessments are. The re-work I use of the old Indy500 “drivers hit the wall / will hit the wall” agage is that there are only two kinds of people on planet Earth: those who are skeptics of AGW and those who would become skeptics if they would just take the time to read skeptic climate scientists’ assessments.

    • Sundance says:

Apparently Pitts isn’t aware that WAIS has melted several times in previous periods and no Republicans were involved unless they were alien Republicans from another planet visiting Earth which it seems he may be stupid enough to believe. 😉

  11. Phil Jones says:

Time and time again the author here points out how these folks puke up the same garbage… The same scare tactics every few years with their Apocalyptic predictions…

Gore shows up in Australia… Record cold temps are set… Where’s the headlines??…

Perhaps these tools need to take a look at that mysterious bright object in the sky… The Ancient ones called it “the Sun”…. The exact opposite is happening folks… It’s all part of a cycle… Mankind has an almost immeasurable affect…

  12. Eric Simpson says:

Huge point about our grandchildren having to contend in the future for beachfront property in St. Louis. Scary. Stephen Schneider, a lead ipcc author, of course understood that it’s good to warn people about this type of thing, as he said back in 1988: “We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.”

Al Gore also is aware that the melt of the polar ice caps is irreversible, and soon all of California, Nevada, and all the way to St. Louis, is going to be engulfed by a sea that will be rising faster and faster each day. But also Al Gore cares about the future financial loss of all those owners of beachside property. Yes, it’s true that up to now no one has lost a cent, as the California sea hasn’t even risen an inch; but soon it will, any day now. So the rich Gore is trying to help these hapless property owners, as he just did by showing charity to the owners of a soon to be underwater beachside CA mansion by buying it off them for $9 million. Very nice of Gore.

  13. emsnews says:

The sea isn’t rising or falling in California, the landmass is under greater and greater pressure due to plate tectonic movements which is compressing the West Coast.

Like in Japan on the other side of the Pacific Plate, a major 9.0+ quake will fix that and the stress will fall and the landmass will lower, too, so the elevation will go down again.

    • David A says:

So if the land is going down, and sea level is lowering, then the SL is dropping even faster then the land Only true if the measurements are from tide gauges.

  14. Gamecock says:

It is clear that Gannett’s star writer, the not-so-pinko-communist Pitts, doesn’t know the meaning of “irreversible.” He doesn’t know what “climate” is, either.

He knows he wants government to take control of everyone. Nothing that leads to that ultimate reality can be immoral.

  15. kirkmyers says:

The column was so over-the-top and “doomsdayish” that at first I thought it was a tongue-and-cheek piece from The Onion. Then, I saw Pitts’ byline and immediately understood. Somehow he’s able to get away with disseminating his schlock to the masses — and gets paid to do it.

He really should do some basic research before going off half-cocked about topics he doesn’t understand. Science is never “settled,” and scientific theories are never arrived at based on “consensus.”

The anthropogenic global warming scare will soon be unmasked as one of the biggest frauds in the history of science. And the hopelessly gullible Pitts will be on record as one of its empty-headed promoters.

  16. David A says:

Sorry to be off topic but I have a question. In my memory I remember the acronym CAGW being commonly used by proponents, and skeptics. I know there was, and are currently countless proclamations of catastrophe by the media, and scientist.

However currently the warmist say that CAGW is a term used by the skeptics. They point to the IPCC using the term CC, for Climate Change since its inception. I know that most scholarly publications used most commonly the term AGW, or GW. Yet I remember may uses of the term CAGW by proponents.

    Am I wrong?
    Did skeptics create that term?

If you have any linked evidence I would appreciate it.

Clearly the term CAGW is more accurate and pertinent, but I still need the history of the acronym.

    Thanks in advance.

    David A
