Does The Arctic Need To Be Prosecuted?

Some climate experts want to make skepticism of junk science a felony, and every day it becomes more clear that the Arctic has no respect for climate models or eminent government scientists. This is shocking, and it is time for the Arctic to be prosecuted. The Arctic is aiding and abetting climate deniers, as well as making obscene gestures towards the world’s leading academics.

Climate experts understand the Arctic, but the Arctic simply doesn’t understand itself.

I’ve been following these charts for years… One trick they use is to DELAY for as long as possible rises such as occurring now. YOu will see CT and Norsex doing this regularly
    http://arctic-roos.org/observations/satellite-data/sea-ice/ice-area-and-extent-in-arctic

In Fact, the only one I trust is DMI DEnmark as they seem to chart live.

    • Jim Hunt says:

      Repeating myself, as requested…..

Do you or Steve/Tony have any idea how these charts are generated?

For your information CT area currently shows no “hiatus”. Why do you suppose that is?

      http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/arctic.sea.ice.interactive.html

      • It includes ice in the Greenland Sea and other don’t care places outside of the Arctic Basin.

        • Jim Hunt says:

Have I got this straight? You’re saying CT area includes the Greenland Sea, whereas DMI extent doesn’t?

Why don’t you care about “places outside of the Arctic Basin”? I seem to recall you getting excited about the amount of ice on the Great Lakes not so very long ago.

        • DMI is measuring extent, and CT is measuring area. My interest is 30+% concentration ice in the Arctic basin which I can do direct comparisons on vs. satellite generated maps.

      • geran says:

(Jim, excuse me for not having more patience with you phonies.)

Okay, both polar ice caps have completely melted. Your kitchen is now 400 feet below sea level, and the polar bears ate all you pets.

        Satisfied?

If not, pay more taxes next time.

        • Jtomc says:

Ok, both polar caps have expanded, your house is under a half mile of ice, and you have no power at all because the solar panels are ice-covered and your wind turbine is frozen. You have eaten all of your pets.

Satisfied? If not, build more coal plants.

    • Dmh says:

NORSEX is a few days average, it is showing 2014 above 2013 by ~ 500,000 km2 and an important slower melting in the last few updates, similar to 2013.
I believe the halt of ice melting shown by DMI will appear in NORSEX if it persists for a few more days.

  2. Eliza says:

BTW you should this to the BBC LOL

  3. Sundance says:

Chances look good that the Arctic will soon be attacked and accused of being a denier funded by the Koch brothers. 😉

  4. stpaulchuck says:

I just read an article a couple days ago that says you can’t trust your lying eyes. Apparently the ice boffins are changing the way they measure sea ice and polar ice and they now can prove the ice has been declining. This just after I read that they are now “adjusting” the satellite record because it does not agree with the land (thermometer) “adjusted” data. Of course the satellites MUST be wrong.

I think the climate ‘grounds keepers’ just need to put the goalposts on wheels to make it easier to move them about as needed.

  5. R. Shearer says:

When will the Antarctic become ice free?

  6. Bill says:

Obscene gestures toward climate scientists? That sounds like a threat to me. We may not want to put the Arctic in prison, but we should at least make sure they are not allowed to speak freely.

It looks as though if it gets cold as predicted the ice could level off but there must be warmer water as well causing melting. About half the melting most years occurs after August 1st even though temperatures start heading down. Even last year 1/3 of the melt occurred after Aug. 1. So I expect something similar to happen this year but the minimum may be higher than last year’s minimum.

    • Dmh says:

OTOH, if you extrapolate linearly the present trend of the ice in the DMI graph the line will reach the average black curve *almost at right angle*.
This is quite remarkable, don’t you think? The DMI graph in fact shows the present Arctic ice trend as slightly increasing.
I’m most curious to see how the trend will evolve in August.
My “first approximation” guess is that it will follow 2013, but slightly above, and- as Steve has said repeatedly here- reach ~ 2006 levels at the end of the summer melt.

      • Bill_W says:

Yes, but I have seen it look like that in past years and it never happens. In fact, in many years if you look at the DMI graph, it will have “doglegs” one direction or another but as you see it always has a similar shape. That’s what I meant by “it looks as though it could level off” – that it looks as though if you extrapolate it will be a right angle. But, I don’t think that will happen – as much fun as that would be it the ice recovered completely in two years after all the talk about death spirals, etc.

    • Dmh says:

Just a final note: the Arctic ice in the average DMI curve shows maximum melting rate exactly at this time of the year, while this year’s trend is flat-lined or even a little increasing. How remarkable is that!

      • Bill_W says:

It is remarkable. I hope it goes flat. Just to finally shut up some of the doomsday prophets. But in reality, it is sad that we are reduced to rooting for ice and cold thanks to these morons.

  7. tom0mason says:

The warmist need to get tough on sea ice, get tougher on the causes of sea ice.
Throw the book at sea ice as this is the thin edge of the wedge, and legislative action must start immediately, if not sooner.

    🙂

  8. gregole says:

The Arctic has turned on the Warmista and stabbed them in the back! Used to be their best friend, especially around this time of year, but now, forget it! So the Warmista and the Arctic are no longer on speaking terms! Don’t believe me? Well, have you heard the Warmista talking about their old friend lately? No, it’s been awhile.

    My how times can change.

  9. wyoskeptic says:

No, but this ought to get interesting:

The Melting Arctic Makes Way for $20,000 Luxury Cruises

If you long to see, up close, an actual polar bear clinging to an actual shrinking ice floe, here’s your chance.

Because of climate change and the melting of the Arctic, the cruise line Crystal Cruises plans to send passengers on what it bills as the first luxury ship to “traverse the Northwest Passage.” The ship, Crystal Serenity, will set sail beginning in August 2016 on ”a mystical Pacific-Atlantic sea route far beyond the Arctic Circle that for centuries captured the imaginations of kings, explorers and adventurers.” The cruise will last 32 days and fares start at $20,000.

Part of the reason that the Northwest Passage captured so many imaginations for so many centuries was that it was choked with ice and impossible to navigate. Climate change has set off a scramble to control the now-accessible shipping routes and mineral rights. The Crystal Serenity is simply following the wakes of the freighters that are already plying the Arctic.

    <<<]

    Bloomberg Business Week so reports.

I wonder if anyone has bothered to tell this cruise line that the arctic is not quite so melted as they may think? Or maybe they only get their info from the mainstream media too?

By the way, I don't think Lloyds is quite so hip on the idea:

    http://www.lloydslist.com/ll/sector/Insurance/article435014.ece

    • rw says:

Wow! That would be fantastic – a cruise liner stuck in the Arctic!

I’d love to seem try and dig their way out of that one.

(Or will it just go the way of Flight 370?)

    • Beale says:

I have a rather romantic idea about the Northwest Passage. Perhaps some Norse mariners of the Medieval Warm Period found and used the Passage, which in their time was passable (I don’t say without danger). They must have kept what they found a trade secret, but enough leaked out to fire the imaginations of later generations.

  10. wyoskeptic says:

Sorry, this is the link for the bloomberg article:
    http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-07-25/climate-change-tourism-cruise-ships-will-cross-the-melting-arctic

Maybe this is an answer for a lot of the warming alarmists. Send ’em up there and let them become polar bear munchies … might work out all the way around.

Nah, that’d be too mean to the polar bears.

  11. Eric Simpson says:

Nuke the Arctic to get it in line. 38 million megatons of explosives will get it to stop colluding with the deniers, and start melting again. And after nuking, the Arctic will think twice before it again considers doing the evil thing that it’s doing now.

    Now, about the Antarctic

  12. tom0mason says:

The graphic from the same source but using the older method (land areas masked out) (IMO) shows better how this year compares to previous years.

Kill Whitey! The racist Arctic denies Obama’s settled science, only allows white bears into its realm, and harbors a known elf abuser.

  14. wyoskeptic says:

    @ gator69 lol

Also, even worse, said elf abuser is reputed not to pay even minimum wage and encourages a known pollutant to be dispersed by reindeer all over the world!

Or otherwise stated as: the EPA HATES reindeer f a r t s.

Watch, the Arctic will be ice-free in 5 weeks!

isn’t there supposed to be a climate “blowtorch” operating there now????

    • Shazaam says:

      Ah Reggie’s “Brawndo-fueled Blow-Hard Blowtorch of Ice Armageddon”….

I seem to recall that there was a little accident with that thing last year and “as a result” the 2013 Arctic ice melt season was quite a disappointment to the CAGW groupies. The 2013 Northwest Passage Rowing / Dragging team had great difficulties as there was far, far more ice than every single one of their climate simulation models had predicted.

My memory fails me as to the exact cause of Reggie’s blowtorch malfunction. I seem to recall a post referencing a fudge packing problem of some kind. Whether that meant that there was fudge in the Brawndo fuel, or fudge in a seal or merely a failure to melt, I was never clear as to the exact cause of the failure of the Ice Armageddon blowtorch to function.

Who knows, maybe Reggie blew a seal!!

After the “Brawndo-fueled Blow-Hard Blowtorch of Ice Armageddon” packed it in, and failed so miserably, the rowing / dragging team quit half-way and declared their expedition a success….

There has been no news that I’ve heard about Reginald’s efforts with the “Brawndo-fueled Blow-Hard Blowtorch of Ice Armageddon” for the 2014 Arctic ice melt season. Who knows, maybe he’s making massive adjustments to that thing even now.

“My interest is 30+% concentration ice in the Arctic basin”

In which case why is your graph at the top based on “areas with ice concentration higher than 15%”, as mentioned in your link?

    • Jim,

You are applying a classic childish time wasting approach (nitpicking irrelevant semantics) which I always ignore. Nothing is happening in the Arctic. Deal with it.

      • Jim Hunt says:

        Steve/Tony,

I am merely trying to understand your confusing (to me at least) explanations of the significance of the graph you keep on posting. Whatever is “happening in the Arctic” it certainly isn’t a “spectacular recovery of Arctic sea ice”. CT Area is still falling fast, and will post another decline of around 150 thousand square kilometers when they eventually get around to updating it.

        http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/arctic.sea.ice.interactive.html

        Deal with it!

        • Bill_W says:

DMI has both a 15% graphic and their older 30% graphic that they still plot. The 30% also masks out coastal areas. The 30% is a better measure of the ice cap but Tony still periodically shows the 15% for variety. They are both accessible at DMI from the same page with one click to go back and forth. It is not difficult. Wait a week and many questions will be answered Jim as ice graphs are updated and the temperatures are forecast to drop. But there will still be some melting due to warm waters. It is Arctic summer after all.

        • Shazaam says:

Maybe Snow White can help Reggie get his “blowtorch” straightened out……

  20. Jim Hunt says:

    Re: Bill_W says: July 27, 2014 at 5:15 pm

I’m aware of all that Bill, apart from the temperatures that “are forecast to drop”. Can you provide a link? Note that according to Crashex on the “Record cold” thread “air temperature is not the primary driver; transport and clouds are bigger factors”

BTW – CT area came in at -157 k
