Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world. Indeed it is the widening of this cap of cold air that is the immediate cause of Africa’s drought.

What is this “polar vortex” nonsense, just a new name for the jet stream? Because it just sounds like buzz word BS to me. Sort of like using “impact” instead of “effect”. Buzzing annoys me.

It is annoying. The polar vortex has always been with us. Like everytime there as been a cold wave.
A polar vortex is a “peninsula” of cold air trapped within the path of the jet stream.
For other reasons then climate change IMO, the Arctic jet stream sometimes takes a southward, slow meander.
The magnitude of super storm sandy was caused by an unfortunate convergence of events. One event was the jet stream holding below it a blocking high pressure area, which along with a (low pressure) nor-easter over the Eastern States caused Sandy to turn westward (a left turn)to the coast instead of following parallel to the coast line like hurricanes usually do.

The global freezing alarms of the 1970s were IMO test runs to see if climate catastrophe messages would carry. The proof was a resounding yes, and so the modern AGW scam-scare was born just a decade or so later.
Maybe TomO—but I was teaching in the sciences then and I really do not remember any public scare at all. Then again, my mind was probably on other things.
I think 1972-3 was when it really took hold. I remember the news reports and reading the likes of Time Magazine and some reports in the newspapers. My friends in UK thought it was it was very likely. I remained less convinced.
I remember it well, also. Mid-70s, especially from 74 to 77. 1974 was a big spring tornado outbreak caused by a cold mid-west + a strong high-amplitude meridional Rossby wave pattern for the jet streams. The strong mid-latitude systems associated with that pattern dropped down along the Rockies, turned East though the South, then up along the coast, pulling in a strong fetch from the Gulf of Mexico.
This type of pattern persisted, though the positioning varied enough that no other really big tornado outbreak happened for the next 30 to 40 years (2011 being the most recent outbreak of that nature). In 1976, a strong Rossby wave generated low dumped 12 inches of rain in one day in Tuscaloosa, along with a lesser tornado outbreak in March. That same year we had 4 to 6 inches of snow fall in early January, closing roads and schools.
Some may remember the big storm in November, 1975. Yeah, the one that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald, if I am remembering correctly. I’m getting old.
While not notably cold here, though, the winter of 1977 was pretty cold north of me. Much of the current weather reminds me of the ‘cold’ 60s and 70s; but for me, all of the coldest days that I can remember all happened on/after 1980.

In the mystic headspace of global climate alarmism what goes around comes around and always conveniently supports the alarmist message of the day. This one will be recycled in another 15 years as evidence of a pending ice age. A compliant main stream media will report it as fact once the bureaucrats write and approve the paper. It will be their only option.
