The music was written in D-flat major, she’s singing it in about a C

Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote the score, which I was not aware of

    Natürlich. 🙂

  5. docfjs says:

Never quite understood the fascination with Eva Peron. She was the wife of a brutal dictator. She and her husband did nothing for Argentina other than rob it blind. I guess one should not learn history from musicals

    • Truthseeker says:

Yes, it is like getting your science from Hollywood …

Never quite understood the fascination with Eva Peron. She was the wife of a brutal dictator.

To quote an under appreciated but nonetheless astute observer of humanity: “Politics is show business for the ugly people” and I guess that ‘ugly’ extends to brutal dictatorships as well …

    • PJ London says:

“Juan Domingo Perón was an Argentine military officer and politician. After serving in several government positions, including those of Minister of Labour and Vice President of the Republic, he was three times elected as President of Argentina, serving from June 1946 to September 1955, when he was overthrown by a coup d’état, and from October 1973 to July 1974.”
“Juan and Evita Perón are still considered icons by the Peronists. The Peróns’ followers praised their efforts to eliminate poverty and to dignify labor, while their detractors labelled them demagogues and dictators. ”
“brutal dictator”, and where exactly did you learn your history?
“eliminate poverty and to dignify labor” well that does not fit with the Corporatistas agenda so they must have been “brutal dictators”
Three times elected as president, like Chavez and Castro. Why not try a little research to get past the US bias?

      • Ben says:

        Thanks PJ for your recommendation.

I did a little research, and actually came to appreciate the statement of docfjs.

Peron frequently exceeded his constitutional authority, and tortured his opponents (on the left and right), like a dictator. Threw out the constitution, like a dictator. Unilaterally nationalized property owned by others, like a dictator.

Yes he was elected. The belief that dictators can’t be elected is a logical fallacy. It is what is done with power once it is acquired that counts.

“In modern usage, the term “dictator” is generally used to describe a leader who holds and/or abuses an extraordinary amount of personal power, especially the power to make laws without effective restraint by a legislative assembly[citation needed]. Dictatorships are often characterised by some of the following traits: suspension of elections and of civil liberties; proclamation of a state of emergency; rule by decree; repression of political opponents without abiding by rule of law procedures”

        • PJ London says:

Well, it sounds on that basis that Obama, Bush and Blair were “Dictators” (Bush actually was upset that he could not be a dictator , to make his life easier, Cheney said he couldn’t and gave him another book about goats to colour in)
It is not surprising that if you listen to the media, then Putin, Assad, Hussein, Chavez, Castro in fact anyone that either does not like US or that US does not like, is a Brutal* Dictator. In each case they are anti corporatist, and pro-welfare. It even gets to the point that they believe that people should have water, energy, housing and transport at reasonable rates (even free!)
If you truly believe that Peron was a Brutal Dictator, and could show evidence of brutality, then fine. I think he was a (very) popular socialist trying to keep his country from becoming a “Banana Republic”,** under control and for the the exploitation of US companies.
Like Chavez, Allende, Castro and Mosaddegh, he had to go so that the “Nationalised” socialist industries could be “Privatised” by international (i.e. US/UK) corporations.

          Brutal
A ruthless, cruel, harsh, or unrelenting act. (E,g. Fallujah, water-boarding, Gaza, Dresden etc.)
          **
(In economics, a banana republic is a country operated as a commercial enterprise for private profit, effected by a collusion between the State and favoured monopolies, a la USA/UK)
