But that story wan’t going to scare anyone into giving up their money, so in 2007 they simply changed Antarctica’s history from cooling to warming.

Other then the questionable TOB, it would appear a LOT easier to get false warm readings.
It is REAL EASY to get ‘warm readings’ when you make up a large percentage of the readings and ‘adjust’ the rest.

Why? Because the people who have the authority to call them up onto the carpet are the same people who are demanding that they tamper with the numbers.
On a more theoretic level, in order for a system to be stable, it needs some type of negative feedback. When something goes too far one way, an opposite push shoves it back toward the original state. Our political (and economic) system is broken. The negative feedback is not only missing in many cases, it has actually become a positive feedback. I am sure that you can think of multiple examples without even trying hard.
I think the short answer to the question is: because in Antarctica, they’re not just lying with a red Crayola crayon or computer airbrush tool. Rather they are using statistics to turn a small handful of cooling stations into an “estimate” of continent-wide warming. They obviously are using their statistical tools incorrectly. And it is overwhelmingly likely that they are doing so with intent to defraud. However, getting members of Congress to state publicly that it is deliberate fraud is hard when none of them can understand the statistical tools that were used, let alone how they were misused.
Remember, if they’re going to do this without the help of any supporting testimony from American scientists (to the effect that “this really can’t be an accident or stupidity, it has to be fraud”), they’re really going out on a limb, and they have got to be able to explain to their constituents the statistical methods used and how exactly they can be misused to turn a negative into a positive over millions of square miles without adding any new data. Can you explain it, Al (or Jason!), and can you do so in a way that they will be able to understand and repeat it to the average voter intelligibly?
If so, perhaps we can arrange a meeting with one or more House members. An Albertan, while not ideal for this purpose, is better than nothing. And right now, nothing is probably what they have in the way of people who will take the time to educate them. We’re not talking about the best and brightest here, we’re talking (for the most part) about folks who went to Congress because they couldn’t hack it in a more respectable profession.
I would also point out that after the November election, I expect the new House to be more amenable to this, and it might be a good idea to hold off until then. But for anyone who wants to make an issue out of this starting on November 5, now is a good time to prepare and plan!

I remember an argument that the interior of Antarctica was getting colder because of the warming was causing the winds around Antarctica were getting stronger, keeping the cold bottled up. That was 2008/ 2009.
