Well this Hoosier could use a little bit of that there global warming here about 32 MI SSE of Indianapolis this morning. 57 deg. F this morning and cloudy with sprinkles. Radar shows more precip than were getting so apparently most of it is Virga. Guess when it warms up a little it will be a good day to pressure wash my structures. Global Warming failed to keep moss from growing on the north facing surfaces of my house and garage over the summer. Last night was darn near a perfect camp fire night though. The only downside was that the skies were mostly cloudy.
The fall colors are starting to become more apparent now. Soybean field across the road to the west is a mixture of yellows and brown. Corn field to the south mostly brown and I’m starting to get fallen leaves from the stalks in my yard. Both are still weeks from being ready for harvest.
Leaves on the broad leaf maple trees turning red and dropping in greater numbers. About half of the big leathery leaves on the cottonwood tree in my back yard are down now. Those big brown fallen leaves are the toughest to mulch up with my mower but I just Love the sound they make when they rub together in a breeze during the spring and summer and the wonderful shade that big tree provides. My two willows have lost almost all of their leaves. But the Chinese elms, Silver maples, and oaks are all still green. the plum and crab apple tree leaves are at their deepest darkest maroon. Sassafras trees in the back field are a mixture of green yellow and reddish brown. The apple trees in that field aren’t turning much yet but of the several varieties only the Red Delicious still has good fruit on it. The cones are almost all down now from the western pines and my single 80′ high Blue Spruce. The Lilac bushes around the house are just starting to turn. Once they all turn I will give them their final trimming of the year.
RAH, about a week ago we had temps in the fifties here in mid North Carolina. I notice last weekend the trees were already turning. We do not have the sugar maples with the glorious reds oranges and deep yellows. We just have pale yellow and mud brown.
Fall colors are the only thing I miss about New England.
I used to drive past this church every day on the way to work. The trees are sugar maples and always had deep red, orange and vibrant yellow leaves. You think the Historic society could have gotten a prettier picture!

Yea I figure another three weeks and it will prime leaf looking time down in Southern Indiana in Monroe and Brown counties. Plan on going down there during that time to Nashville, IN. It’s a little old artsy kind of place full of shops. Potters working their wheels. Leather and metal smiths and jewelers and rustic furniture and candy makers and home caners all doing their things and selling their wares. And the bill of board at the Nashville Inn and Ordinary restaurants are excellent! Famous for it’s “Brown County Biscuits”. Round little deep fried slightly sweet treats they are. Also have a hunger for some cashew butter and that’s the only place I know of around here to get it.
