In 1988, James Hansen from NASA said the warming trend was 99% certain to be caused by CO2.
A year later, Tom Karl from NOAA said that most of the warming occurred before CO2 started rising. A direct contradiction of what Hansen told Congress.
Hansen’s own 1981 graph showed that temperatures peaked around 1940, and then declined for 40 years. After the PDO shift of 1977, temperatures started to rise again. A direct contradiction of what he told Congress.
Hansen’s claim of 99% certainty to Congress was completely fraudulent. There was no scientific basis for it. He obviously didn’t believe it himself.
It’s really tough to ask a man to speak against his paycheck, career and family’s financial security, isn’t it? It’s a career game for these guys- I sold some of the most sensitive air monitoring equipment to universities and the government. First it was CO2. Lots of $ to do research. The it was CH4. More $ to write proposals for grants to do research. The it was N2O- more $ available for grants. Then it started to be natural isotopes of CO2, CH4 and N2O to study how they moved through the environment. I asked one doesn’t the H2O present in the atmosphere at much higher levels than CO2 and with a stronger IR absorbance account for much of the energy absorbed?
I was told “don’t go there”.
“At this point what does it really matter?” per our ex Secretary of State.
Essentially a generational shift. The scientists witnessing the global temperature decline after the mid 1940’s was the WWII generation. How guys like Karl and Hansen who are generation transitional twist their heads around the field reversal in data, mindset and meme is an unsettling study in human psychology.
A year later, Tom Karl from NOAA said that most of the warming occurred before CO2 started rising.
Would that be the same Tom Karl that recently put his name to a pause debunking paper, having reached his conclusions apparently by substituting the old bucket and engine room intake sea water temperatures – of extremely variable accuracy – for the ARGO temperatures which are supposed to be accurate to around a hundredth of a degree?
