Outside of Alaska and California, last year was not a big fire year. The Rocky Mountains were very wet and had one of the quietest fire seasons on record. The constant climate fraud from the New York Times gives me something to write about almost every single day.
It’s not surprising that ten times more forest burned before Europeans arrived and felled much of the forest to open up agricultural lands. America today also possesses the technology to fight forest fires. So your comparison, to put it politely, is based on a false equivalence that is so blatant you really should be embarrassed. It’s also surprising that you accuse Scientific American of ‘fraud’ when every article references the scientific studies relevant to them. Tell the truth, Steve, you couldn’t understand one of those studies if your life depended on it.

Raymond, you apparently have problems with reading for comprehension. The New York Times says that last year was a record year. Steven presents documents showing that it was NOT a record year. One of the documents was an article from the same New York Times contradicting their current claim. Another was a chart from the US Forest Service showing past years with almost five times the acreage burned. The last document was from the National Interagency Fire Center reporting that in the past annual burns consumed about 12 times as much acreage.
I ask you the simple question: is the New York Times now lying rather egregiously when they claim that 2015 was a record?

1937 was before the Europeans arrived? Before the fire hose was invented? That was the purpose of the post, to show fire acreage burned in 1937 compared to today, not 1550 compared to today.
The fact of the matter is that the NY Times told a blatant lie about worst fire season on record. If they had told the truth, but then stated that fire fighting today is better than it was in 1937, I would be fine with that. But instead they chose to create scary, untruthful propaganda rather than intelligently and factually reporting the news.

Rush Limbaugh has said many times that there are actually more trees in the US now than when the Pilgrims arrived. He is probably correct but most of them sure aren’t the old growth deciduous types that that abounded back then but instead the smaller and faster growing coniferous pines as are grown at tree farms for pulp and construction. Any one that has bought hardwoods over the last few years knows that good native types are very tough to come by. Heck they keep a special grove just to have a source for the Live Oak necessary to restore the USS Constitution periodically as is going on now.
I do know that here in Indiana there have been more whitetail deer found during the last two deer censuses than were found during the first one in the 1890s.

They meant to say that the 10,100,00 acres was a record “in recent memory”. (With recent memory meaning “in the last year or so”.)
