On this date 110 years ago, San Francisco was destroyed by a massive earthquake and fire. It had nothing to do with fracking or climate change.

Well the predictions and assertions of the alarmists routinely grow more ridiculous, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the 1906 earthquake was attributed to “climate change”. Maybe they will declare climate change is so bad it can reach into the past to cause disasters so all blizzards, floods, and earthquakes that have ever occurred are due to people using fossil fuels now.
That photo was probably taken by hoisting a camera with a huge box kite. The Wright Brothers had flown just a few feet three years earlier and even blimps were fairly new and expensive.

April 18th is a very busy day in US history.
“1775 – In Massachusetts, British troops march out of Boston on a mission to confiscate the Patriot arsenal at Concord and to capture Patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock, known to be hiding at Lexington.”
“1806 – Putatively hoping to locate sailors who had deserted the Royal Navy, the British began to impress American merchant ships.”
This practice had a great deal to do with the war of 1812.
“1861 – Colonel Robert E. Lee turned down an offer to command the Union armies. 1861 – Battle of Harpers Ferry, VA.”
“1942 – From the decks of the USS Hornet, Col. Doolittle leads 16 B-25 bombers for a raid on Tokyo. ”
This raid, intended merely to strike back at the Japanese at a time when all the war news was bad for the US had an effect on the course of the war all out of proportion to it’s import. The Japanese high command having repeatedly sworn to the emperor that no such attack was possible had lost face. To prevent it from happening again they advanced their time schedules and thus the battle at Midway was fought 6 months earlier than had been originally intended and front line Japanese fighters and their pilots that were scheduled to be deployed for offensive operations were instead retained in the home islands to prevent any more such raids.
Today there are four of the Doolittle Raiders that still survive.

“1943 – An aircraft carrying the Commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, Admiral Yamamoto, is shot down by P-38 Lighting fighters over Bougainville. Yamamoto is killed. This action is the result the interception of a coded Japanese message announcing a visit by Yamamoto. The Japanese fail to deduce that their codes are insecure.”
1945 – Ernie Pyle was killed by enemy fire on the island of Ie Shima.
“1983 – The U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, is almost completely destroyed by a car-bomb explosion that kills 63 people, including the suicide bomber and 17 Americans. The terrorist attack was carried out in protest of the U.S. military presence in Lebanon.”
“1988 – The United States launches Operation Praying Mantis against Iranian naval forces in the largest naval battle since World War II. Operation Praying Mantis was an attack by U.S. naval forces within Iranian territorial waters in retaliation for the Iranian mining of the Persian Gulf during the Iran–Iraq war and the subsequent damage to an American warship. On 14 April, the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts had struck a mine while deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Earnest Will, the 1987–88 convoy missions in which U.S. warships escorted reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers to protect them from Iranian attacks. The explosion blew a 25-foot (7.6-meter) hole in the Roberts’s hull and nearly sank it.”
I know a guy that was a sailor on that ship and he told me that there was no way that his ship should not have sunk. It was a testament to the crew and their expedient damage control measures that she didn’t.

As per 1943: Japanese mid-rankers, especially but not exclusively field officers, DID come the conclusion more than once that their codes had been broken somewhere along the line (as at Midway). But the hierarchies of the Japanese military and their unique brand of non-communication between army and navy meant that these observations were ignored or supressed.
Yep they eventually figured it out but hadn’t done so yet when Yamamoto got his (though some of the lower ranking officers involved in it day to day may have already had the suspicion. The US made sure to fly several more sweeps with the P-38s in the area where they shot him down to make it look like it was just a happenstance encounter with a routine patrol even though the decision to assassinate Yamamoto was approved by FDR. The thing was the announcement of Yamamotos schedule was broadcast to and by everyone concerned including the Army using several different codes. Very poor signal security.
But by 1944 some of the Japanese knew for certain that their most secure code was compromised. They would try and fox US subs by broadcasting false messages that were then cracked and sent to the subs as ULTRAs.
Against the Japanese and Germans the allied commanders enjoyed far better signal intelligence than their enemies did. In both cases the enemy eventually figured out their messages were being read. Hitler demanded nothing but false messages be sent in preparation for his greatest offensive on the Western front. And the Japanese managed to surprise the US Navy at Leyte.

Neither. The truth will never be known as to which really got Yamamoto. It’s kinda like asking if I’m a Bong man or a McGuire man. Both shot down quite a few more aircraft than they were officially credited for though Bong of course ended up ahead in the official count though I believe that McGuire was the superior pilot and most certainly the superior combat leader.

and historian Donald P. Bourgeois who both researched the event extensively believe that Barber was the one that actually go him.
But what I am is a P-38 man. I think the aircraft has gotten less credit for what it did than it should have.

There is a similar controversy over who actually killed “The Red Baron” Manfred von Richthofen. Turns out it was either a Aussie machine gunner or a never to be known Aussie infantryman and probably not Canadian aviator Capt. Roy Brown. All of the guns that fired at Richtohfen from the air and ground were .303 so it is another case that the truth will never be known for certain.
Should have been clearer. The Allies enjoyed superior signal intelligence at the strategic level against both opponents. Against the Japanese they enjoyed superior tactical intelligence for most of the war also. Remember the Navajo code talkers. But the Germans were very adept at tactical signal intelligence and remained so nearly to the end of the war.
