They probably did their math right, but what can you do with a small dataset? I’m assuming that their dataset here is 100 years, if that. So given that this has been a fairly homogenous period, I wonder how wide one standard deviation is? If it is a small percent, then possibly they are making inferences that are out of whack. If they wait until they have 500 years of data, then I’ll be more inclined to believe they can project a 2000-year. Right now their understanding of a 2000-year event is based on a period of great stability.

What they are saying is that it was indeed caused by climate change. That is what you are supposed to read. The “likely” crap is just anus protectus/plausible deniability if someone challenges them.
“Likely” is not a force. It cannot cause anything. “Climate change” would be changes in weather over time. It would be a RESULT, not a CAUSE. The weather change is reduced see ice. They are saying the reduced sea ice is caused by reduced sea ice.
